what's the best way to remove stripe

I'm thinking of removing the stripe that runs along the bottom of the car & was wondering what the easiest way to remove it is. I believe it's just a vinyl stripe & thought using a heat gun will do it & but wanted to make sure this would be ok on the original paint (1984, not clear coated) and on the nose & bumper. Thanks
