Preping for paint months before getting it painted?
if i'm getting the car painted in a few months (3 or so), would it be horrible for me to start preping it now? sanding it , filling in some imperfections (notibly a little scratch in the door and some rust spots i've sanded down), and spray it with spray can primer?
what should i do?

I wouldn't; spray can primer isn't waterproof. It'll absorb water and you'll get rust underneath the primer- that's why my car is so damn rusty.
If you want to do bodywork now, as long as you topcoat what you do (with paint or a sealer or something), it'll be okay. Just don't leave it in bare primer.

well as it is theres a few spots where i've just sprayed primer over where i've sanded down/wire brushed surface rust off......mostly on the drivers side door........
I dont care how the car looks really, i'd just rather work on the body a little bit at a time rather than trying to get the whole thing done in a weekend or something when it comes time to have it painted.....
if i can start now, i'd be able to just clean up the prep work a little when the time comes, which will probably take MUCH less time than going through and sanding all the stuff down or whatever....

Yeah, im using a rattle can to prime mine, but im also getting painted a week after im done with the body work. I would recommend using something other than a rattle can to prime it, if its going to be holding out for some time.

top coat meaning....?
I dont have a compressor or access to one that i could use to spray with, so its pretty much gotta be rattle-can....
