AC box question

Today I noticed the bottom half of the black plastic (??) box on the firewall appeared to have come loose from the top and was hanging down a bit. When I attempted to raise it up and snap it back together it began to shatter into small pieces. That plastic is brittle as can be. Everytime I pushed or poked it it cracked or a hole broke through. I pushed my finger through it in two places!! I've got cars way older and the plastic on those AC coil units are still tough and solid. Anyone every have a problem like this? Looks like I'll be going to the junkyard to try to find a replacement in good condition. Momma's gotta have AC when she rides with me.

no one else has had the same problem and figured out what caused it? Oh well, I'm getting ready to go to the junkyard in a few minutes to see if I can find some good pieces there. The Chevy parts department wants around $150 for the outside pieces that make up the cover for the coil. The junkyard sounds better if I can get some in good shape.

I looked at several cars at KMK's in Dallas, when they were in business. None that I saw were that out of shape, I just wanted the cleanest I could find. That part of the box is exposed to a lot of heat especially if you have headers. I dont think I lent any knowledge, but I just thought I'ed throw my pennies out there.

i've never seen that problem either. I have a couple units laying in my garage and they're in fine shape.

Thanks for the input. I have other vehicles (camaros included) that are older and that plastic box is as tough as new. for some reason this one is falling apart and I hated to buy another one and put it in (looks like a painful job) without some idea why this one fell apart.
