Help, ? about center t-top bar

I have a few questions for you guys about the center t-top bar that mounts to the body. My local chevy dealer told me there are 2 different bars for our cars. One is for 82-85, and the other is for 86-92. My buddy has a 89 camaro and by looking at his I can't see any difference, and we also tried my t-tops on his car and they worked just fine. So, does anyone really know what, if any difference there is? Has anyone done what I am trying to do by putting on the later model bar or vice versa? Oh I should mention the whole reason I am asking is because GM has discontinued the 82-85 bar, but still has the later model one. Any info will help, thanks guys.

William

I can't anwer your question, but I bought a used later model center molding for my 87 from them. It was a very usable piece with minimal rust.

I had it sandblasted, then I used a gel type aircraft paint stripper to get the glue from the old weatherstrip off the metal. Worked great.

These guys have used pieces for your year in stock for $65.

Thanks for the info and help. I finally got someone from my local dealer to do some research for me and he found out it's only a cosmetic difference between the 2 bars, and either one will mount and work with any 82-92. So I bought a new one from them.

The reason there were two different T-bar styles was because the 1982-early 85 T-Top hatches have plastic trim around the outer edge so they're a little thicker. The trim was ommited starting in late-85.

I've tried both style T-Tops on early and later cars and didn't notice any fit problems. The rubber weatherstripping seems to be thick enough to keep the hatches tight.
