87 camaro hatch onto 82 Z28 swap, big problems!
well i swapped an 87 base hatch assembly onto my 82 Z28 today
the 87 one is a base model one with the third brake light unit in it
i didnt notice until it was too late how much larger and different the 87 spoiler is than the 82 one
the 87 spoiler goes forward onto/over the deck plate alot more than the 82 one does and its a bit taller too, a little different shape, couldnt notice the height/shape difference until after the swap,,
also another problem: even after swapping the latch plate from the 82 hatch onto the 87 hatch it still doesnt latch, at all, but it does shut all the way down
the 87 one was a power pul down one, the 82 is not
what is the deal ??
i cant believe all the differences
these are like two totally different camaros here..
i didnt expect everything to be so different
wow.,.,
the whole reason i swapped these was to have the third light on my 82
has anyone successfully done this ?
apparently it cannot be done
thanks for anything

also how does the third light even work ??
there are no wires going into the hatch assembly, just a funky lever contact switch under the third light deck and yellow and blue wires and grounds
where in the hell does hot source come from ? thin air ?
what is the wierd switch mechanism for ?
oh wait, there was another half of the thing with contacts for the switch deal- on the 87 body tub, wasnt there?
uh oh.....

You'll need to swap that contact assembly into your 82. The yellow wire generally ran to the switch on the brake pedal, but on a Camaro, you can splice it into one of the brake light power wires - not the marker, turn signal, or backup wires.
They're usually grounded through the passenger side strut, with the defroster, or through the contacts if the car does not have the defroster option.
As for the striker issue, you may only need to adjust the latch so it will catch. Where your hatch closes fully, but doesn't catch, you'll need to raise the latch assembly, but there may or may not be enough travel for it...

welp it looks like im swapping the 82 z28 hatch back onto the 82 because im pretty sure i didnt save the contact deal from the 87 maro body tub
and besides the 87 hatch spoiler doesnt match the spoiler pieces on the quarter panels of the 82 and i didnt save the quarter panel spoiler pieces off the 87 because they looked the same- without side by side comparing
so no wi have a worthless 87 camaro third light hatch assembly i get to scrap
hum
what a waste.
all i wanted was a third light on my 82, but well thats impossible to do.,
thanks

as far as the third brake light goes it wont work no matter if i did get the other half of the contact switch becuase the freaking base 87 maro spoiler is larger than the 82 z28 one, doesnt match
so this swap is ruined
i wanted the 87 third light on my 72
but nope, it can and wont work no matter what
thanks

It should swap right over; you could pop out the plastic plugs and measure the disrance between the studs/nuts to be sure.
