Notchbacks

I was just wondering how many people on this forum own origional notchbacks, and just how rare they are.

My buddy who also frequents this board has 2 of them. The first one got damaged during transportation but he got to keep it and it is defenitly salvagable. The other one made it to him in great shape and its on his GTA. He is addicted to those things and wants to buy every one he can find. Very unique hatch and its unbelievable how light it is compared to the stock hatch and glass.

I own an original notchback hatch. I plan to convert my 88 Firebird Formula to a nochback when I have it re-painted.

I personally have an origional 88 Notchback, with the 305 replaced and a 350 in its place, t-tops, and all the other fancy stuff that GTA get. only problem is that im 17 and i can't afford to fix any problems i have with it.

Are there any companies that sell the notchback conversion kit? High back rear seats and all?

No. Also the aftermarket notchbacks are different than the OEM version. Not only can you easily distinguish the two visually, the aftermarket one uses acrylic for the rear window where the OEM has a tempered glass rear window with integral defrost wires.

I bought an oem notchback to put on my 91 Formula.

I saw a GTA nothcback sell on ebay last week (did not have original motor) and had 91-92 front end, all else GTA go for $1800

Just a question, how much does it cost for an OEM notchback, and are they easy to get?

Easy to get, hardly. Slightly less rare than hen's teeth. No one is molding them new. They show up occasionally on eBay or one of the classified sections of the F-Body web sites (where I found mine locally). The seller got it at a Pick-a-Part. How much do they cost? The better question how much is one worth to you? A local Member snagged the rear seat from a notchback recently on eBay. The seat is a bit less rare considering it was also used on the 1989 Turbo Trans-Am. To acquire either item a notchback or TTA had to die to donate it.

As stated, they are obsolete. i recall that one person had an OEM (new in box) Notchback lid without the hardware. i cannot recall the exact price, but i think it was something like 800-1500?

i'm not sure of any replication source, but i don't think it is honestly worth it. Buying the notch and rear seats for a non-notchback GTA means the numbers won't match and any true collector that might be interested in such a car some time down the road would likely not be interested in a replicated notchback.

There was not an 1987 GTA Notchback. Unless it is a OEM Notchback lid on a regular 1987 GTA.

Actually, GTA. You couldn't get a Notchback option on just the Trans AM. It had to be a GTA.

Looking at the picture, i can see the Notchback seats. So either the post got the year wrong, or the GTA in question is a cloned Notchback.

Yea I probaly just have the wrong year. He has worked for GM dealers in the past so he has tons of data backing it as numbers matching original.

I think the notchback is sweet... one little problem I didn't like... the 3rd brake light sandwiched between the spoiler.... what good is a 3rd brake light an inch above the regular lights? I took mine out & filled the holes... leaving it would ruine the lines

Of course you can do that. It's not like a regular spoiler where you'd have a huge hole to fill. I wonder if there is a HMSL that could be adapted from say the rear window of a sedan station wagon or mini van that could be put at the top of the rear window? I've got a junker 740 turbo here. I'll see if it might work.

Lon

PS: It looks as if it would work. There are two plastic tabs that glue to the window. The HMSL slips onto those tabs. I'll have to find the plastic shroud that covers the light assembly to see if it would work better at the bottom or top of the rear window of the notchback.

Do you have the RPO sticker sheet inside the center console? Look for an AA8 code.

Less accurate, but do you have the rear Notchback/TTA seats?

You can also contact PHS and with your VIN, they could tell you if it is an original Notchback. Of course, you have to buy their package to get that information.

when i got the car it had a regular seat in back but the guy said he had a differnt seat in his garage and they were the taller backed ones but dirty and torn up he said i could have them but i turned him down due to lack of space at home, but then he did have tons of other parts in his garage so who knows if they were the accual ones, would the plastic panels be any differnt on the inside?

Actually, remove the passenger plastic panel where the spare tire is. The Notchbacks came with a spare tire cover, as well as a sticker that said "Notchback" and was specific instructions for how to store a used tire in the back seat while the spare tire was in use.

The point is appearance, it doesn't have to be #'s matching, unless you want to win a concours award or are looking to sell for maximum return. If you just like the look, do it. The majority of 3rd gen cars that are still running are probably not 100% stock, like the day they left the factory. My 89 Iroc 5.7 has 92 ground effects & cowl induction hood, my 94 TA has a cowl induction hood and notchback hatch. Obviously, not the way they came from the factory, but, I like it, and thats all that matters to me.

There is a lid on E Bay right now for 350 or around there. Don't worry about not being a "true" notchback. It's all what YOU want. If you ever want to sell, you will find a buyer. The car will be worth whatever someone is willing to pay, wheather the number match or not.

that would be cool if the back window was power and went down, like a del sol or pickup/suv.
