Fixed Antenna to Factory Power Antenna
Does anyone know if this can be done? My 89 Trans Am has a fixed mast antenna and I want a power antenna -- what will i need to put in a factory GM antenna? Any additional wiring?
Thanks!

i'm not sure what you need to convert but i do know you'll need a positive ground and power antenna remote wire. So you'll have to run those for sure. But shouldn't be too awful bad. worst part will be running the power antenna wire.

Do you know if the good ole GM execs made the wiring harness the same for all the cars that year and you just added on options or would i have to get a wiring harness with the relay?

The harness on the radios generally have the control wire, pink, for the power antenna. The relay harness would be either above the passenger side lower dash panel or kick panel. The early,'82-'84,cars have a single harness with the plug provisions for most options.I don't know if GM changed this after '85.Best way to do the conversion is to take the passenger side fender off. This makes it easier to mount everything.

Isn't there a wiring harness that plugs into the harness from the power antenna and then plugs into the relay? Did the relays come standard on all the cars so that you could add the power antenna or do you have to buy all that too?

my car came with one. I know the connection is under the plastic part on the dash under the "glove compartment". That wire should be there if you don't have the antenna. Also, I remember hearing a relay whenever I powered it on.
