Spare tire well rust

I have an 87 GTA it has very minor rust except for one spot that is on the spare tire well. There is about a golf ball sized hole in it and a good portion of the rest of it feels week and brittle. My question is what would be the best way to have this repaired? Should I have a spare tire well cut out of a rust free car and have it welded in or should I just have a welder weld in some patches? Any idea what it would cost? Thanks

You might consider a POR-15 fix: paint, mesh, filler. I used this method in the floorboard of my car. By the time I cut the rust away, I had a rectangle that was an inch wide by six long. The fix is still strong after several years.

Id really rather not use body filler and just have it fixed it right.

You could probably get a nice rust free piece cut out of a car..........and either get it welded in, or buy a mig welder and weld it yourself. it will be somewhat time consuming and messy, but if you really want it right, that's one way to do it. Pat
