Alright, yes I did alot of searching and hours of reading but man is it hard to piece some info together, so I have just a few questions.

First, I have an 88' iroc, 5-speed 305tpi. I want to use the 97-02 camaro dash because I like the way it looks, but I hear that their guage cluster is harder to rig up. Also, I think I saw that all of the 4th gen firebird dash's look the same throughout 93-02, and they look like the 97-02 camaro dash. If that's true then I guess i can just use a 93-02 bird dash.

Me first question is, why do I keep reading that it's harder to get the 97-02 cluster to work (speedo/tach wise)? And if I use the 97-02 dash, can I use the 93-96 guage cluster with it?

I've also read that some people have gotten their speedo/tach to work fine without the dakato digital conv. and would like to know how. Though I don't mind using it, just curious. My main concern of course is getting speedo/tach to work, so if anyone could tell me just basically what I need, that'd be appreciated. Keeping in my mind I want to use the 97-02 style dash.

 

the reason it is harder to use the 98+ cluster is due to the fact that is is LS1, the tach signal comes from the ecm and is basically like a 4 cyl tach signal... the speedo would still work, it is looking for a 4000 ppm signal just like the 93-97 cluster is as well as the 91-92 3rd gens get.. .. other problems with the 98+ clusters are the fuel gauge as it is getting a different signal .. and the digital odo on this cluster.. pretty much all of these problems have been figured out by people on the boards.. the dakota box would fix the tach issue on the 98+ clusters..

the dash in the bird and camaro are different.. they were never the same... 93+ bird dash never changed too much really if at all.. 93-96 camaro dash is different then the 97+ dash... you can use the 97+ camaro dash.. and use the 97 LT1 cluster without the digital odo.. or use the 93-97 bird cluster...

in your application if you are using it on an 88 camaro.. you would also need a buffer box from a 3rd gen bird.. since you have a mechanical vss instead of electrica.. you need to also change to a electric vss on the tranny as well...or get an adapter to change the mechanical putput to electrical to drive your speedo....
