Removing manuel shift ****?

Does anyone know how to remove a manuel shift **** from a 91 bird? Iv'e been trying to unsrew it but it won't give.

I used a pair of vice grips on the **** to get enough leverage to turn it.

once I did that, came right off. Before that... I couldnt get the damn thing to budge.

If it keeps slipping in your hands, try some heavy rubber gloves, like dish gloves
