paint directions

im real new to body work on cars and i need to know what is all involved in preppin the car to get it ready for paint. I have a factory paint job no rust just faded and a crappy color. Do i have to sand the whole thing before I paint or just paint over it. I just ordered a gravity fed hvlp paint gun. What paint works best together and has the best results. How many coats of each kind of paint I need to make a good paint job. I dont need places to get paint just like what based paint to get and what clear and primer paint to use. thanks for any advice

i went to barnes and noble book store and got 'how to paint your car' for like 18.95 .... about 160 'color' pages, no b&w ... tells you everything u need to know, a real good book! i read it twice already, i feel comfortable enough to paint my car next spring, prep and body work this winter/fall.... its worth the 20 bucks....

The most important part of a paint job is the prep work, making sure the surface is smooth and clean so the paint sticks, etc. Basically I what I am saying is if you want a quality job and plan on doing it yourself I would reccommend you read few books and search around the boards as well.
