Replacing the Shifter ****

How do you remove the round leather shifter **** on an IROC. I bought a square one and it has a clip but can't find anything on the round one.

Thanks

If the car is a manual tranny, the shifter ball is screwed on. If it's auto and has the detent button on top the following is from the Haynes manual (edited for brevity)

1. Pull up on the shift detent button assembly and remove it from the shifter.
2. Remove the snap ring at the bottom of the shifter button hole.
3. Pull the **** off.
