3M Undercoating
well i was thinking about using this stuff to rustproof my floorboards in my car, was wondering if the 3m stuff works well? i have considered por 15 but im on a budget and with $33 a pint, i want to do it the best cheapest way. Any suggestions welcome.

you don't need to put that stuff on thick unless thats what you want. but a pint can do a lot of area. all you have to do is make sure that you don't see the metal or rust under the paint. all you have to do to prep it is use a wire brush just to remove the heavy rust if you have that, wipe down with a rag and start painting. i haven't used the 3m stuff but i know POR 15 work better when the area is a little rusty rather than a clean piece of metal. check out this site its cheaper than $33 for a pint you can get a quart for cheaper than the pint. www.AutoBodyDepot.com its under POR rust prevention on the left.

3M is an industry standard. They make some of the best paint and body supplies out there. I've used their undercoating in my wheel wells and can't complain.

ive seen enough rubber undercoating still intact with rust behind it to discourage its use unless needed
wheel wells and undercarriage, helps keep noise down, keeps rocks from chipping your paint, but dont think its some kind of rust fighter

there's a special on 3m rubberized undercoating in a spray can for $10 on that website i posted earlier. its under adhesives and sealers.

Im with DR1, rubberized undercoating will not protect against rust. If you want it for the look, then sand down or media blast, spray with EPOXY sealer then use the ruberized undercoating ontop. I think that stuff absorbs moisture.

WOW funny you should ask. i am currently undercoating the entire car and the wheel wells. I sanded off the rust from the floor pans last year and put on a coat of POR15 then coated that with rubberized undercoat. i decided to do a second coat and do the wheel wells since they were kind of bare. i am using the 3M stuff, u can get it fairly cheap at walmart. it works well. BTW it is a MESS!!! the stuff gets all over your face when u spray it on the bottom on the car. you will look very tan

So do u guys suggest i use por15, im just doing the inside floor pans. Btw good pics, evenually i might do the wheel wells and such.

So will the stuff prevent rust, i want my car 2 last a long time, will it work well in the inside floorboards?(3M)

me personally i would use the por 15 for the floor boards and 3m for the wheel wells. but thats just me i'm not saying that the 3m stuff sucks i'm just saying thats what i would do.

if you dont have any rust to begin with, you might not want to spend all that money on POR15...you could just use rubberized undercoat (3M or whatever). Now if ur willing to do anything for the car, you could paint it with POR15 then coat that with 3M... that way the POR15 doesnt fade or chip or whatever from the elements

I would use the POR-15 for the inside floorboards.
I think we bought the little kit with 3 small cans of POR-15 and I think it only took 1 can to do my entire floorpan.

por 15 will seal the metal that you paint whether it sees water or not and it prevents rust. what if you drop a drink in your car, if you allow that, the rubberized stuff protects agains abrasions like rocks and doesn't prevent rust. my suggestion use the por 15 for your floor boards if your going to put carpet back in. if not just prep the metal and rhino line that **** dude

if you are only going to POR15 one side, do the outside...it sees a lot more water and salt than the inside. it would be best to do both sides if u have the time and money

I've used POR15 several times and have had different results every time. Some times OK, most times not so OK. They no longer make their own products and have lost the quality they had in the early days, and every time you turn around they raise the prices (was 105.00 Gal. in April went to 117.75, and I just received an email that they are going up 5% on Oct 1). The semi-gloss is crap, it dries to all different degrees of gloss. When I emailed to ask why, they just said it was the nature of that finish. Their tech support line is only there M-F from 9-5, sorry but I have a job and don't work on my car during that time. My buddy and I ran into KBS Coatings at a show in Texas a couple of months ago. These guys knew the product!! They claimed they sold POR-15 for 10+ years and got tired of fielding complaints that the manufacturer did not know how to address (since they don't make the products anymore), that they have begun to carry KBS Rustseal for the past year, and have had rave reviews from customer and themselves. The Satin black lays out beautiful and consistent. Plus, imagine this, they answer the tech lines until 8 or 9pm everyday of the week. Anyone who has painted the underside of their car the way 87_CDN iroc has, how do you get it clean enough to paint like that? Pressure washer? bead blasting?

well, mine was pretty dirty, but mostly grease, oil, and some road dirt/sand gunk. Usual stuff.
I just scrubbed it with a scotchbrite, and some soapy water. Dried it, scuffed certain parts, maybe some wire wheel, etc, then some "prep step", then brushed on "Rust-Not". However, I swear, some places I was painting OVER dirty. I just couldn't see the dirt on the black paint before.
And some crevaces are impossible to get into to scrub. So, do you guys pressure wash the underside, or just hose and brush sorta thing?

A slightly different take on whats been said already. Eastwoods rust encapsulator is a very easy product to use. A friend of mine jet washed the underside of his '80 Camaro, treated the rusty areas with rust encapsulator, THEN applied a specially brewed mix of underseal, probably 3M or similar, and gearbox oil (around 15%) I think??? The result is an underseal which dries hard but retains a very slight tacky feeling. Have you ever cleaned off some oil from the engine bay or whatever only to find the paint underneath is as clean as the day it was done? The added oil in the undercoat should have the same effect. With the rust encapsulator I can only say that I have had some parts outside for a few years with no rust coming back.
