Starting Help

Hey guys, I have an old 82 that I have not worked on myself other than simple oil changes and checking fluids. I got it in my head to start to restore or at least get it running again without any guys doing it for me. I actually got it charged and running very rough yesterday. As soon as I turned it off it died immediately again. I had the battery charging for hours and it does not seem to hold a charge. I'm guessing this is the first place to start? Also, some guy told me that my tires are expired. Is this even a valid statement? Are comments like these directed at me because I'm female?
Thanks Cat

Tires do expire. If its been setting they are likely dry rotted. Ive seen the tread peel away from a dry-rotted tire. Doesnt do the car any good when that happens. Rubber has a life like anything else and it does go bad.
