Hood pins to secure rear hatch?

Basicly im sick to death of my rear hatch. My car has a very solid rear and driving around on some of the roads around here knocks the rear about abit and causes the hatch to move and reef on the assembly occassionally.

Basicly I was looking at it today, after it had crushed ANOTHER poxy little ceramic guide. Bringing my remaining total to 4 (i think). I was thinking of better ways to secure the thing down and I came up with using the same pins i have for the hood, on the rear hatch.

I never have to open the thing, unless im working on the car, since theres nothing back there but the battery and fuel pump relay. Plus what little storage space is left is going to be used up by the half cage.

If i did do it, id install them under the spoiler just inside the edges, but leave the hatch pulldown gear there, since it would still be required to lock the car. So id close the hatch as per normal, but then push the edges down maybe a further 2-3mm and lock them in with a pin.

What do you guys think? Would it work? Am i being stupid? What is teh meaning of life?

EDIT: Just had it explained to me that the hatch needs to move slightly. If its totally secured the glass will brake in no time. Glad i asked around first. :P

Yeah, when the body flexes, but the glass doesn't, nothing good is going to happen...

it sounds like the hatch pulldown was braking on you. Maybe you can go to a solid mount hatch latch instead of the pulldown unit. If the mounts are different, you may need to weld in a mount from a junk f-body that had the solid mounting latch, but that isn't much more work than the pins would have been.

Yeah the pulldown gear is getting a bit worn. Already replaced the plasic gear and plastic housing due to brakage.

Unfortunatly there's almost no such things as junker 3rd gens here. Everything prity much needs to be sourced from the US.
