Re: Phase I complete, now Phase II IROC restoration - on to the interior!

Neil- I am using the same headlight covers that you are. I chose to use two tiny hinges at the leading edge. My car isn't done yet so I can't say how well they work, but I think they will be fine. to completely remove them will just require that they be tipped up and the small screws removed. I plan on using them more for aerodynamics than looks..........I posted the pictures under another thread entitled "headlight covers that won't come off"

Re: Phase I complete, now Phase II IROC restoration - on to the interior!

Been following this thread for all too long.

Like your dash emblem. Infact, i did the same thing to my 4th gen dash, except i did mine back in may when i first swapped my dash lol.

Cant wait to see this thing all finished up!

Im inspired by your door panels, im trying to get something worked out for mine. Im running into the same issues you had with your camaro panels, im trying to determine a way around that.

If you figure something out, post pics!

I always liked the headlight covers from GTS, but hated those stick on piece things.

Re: Phase I complete, now Phase II IROC restoration - on to the interior!

Progress update: I haven't touched the car in the last week, though I picked up the rear ZO6 brake caliper adapter brackets from my machinist (Voigt Machine) Houston, TX. They did a bada$$ job on the adapter brackets! I bought backing plates w/ the parking brake assy for a '98-'02 camaro and that fits the ZO6 rotor perfectly. I'll post pics after I take a few snap shots of everything.
I also dropped off my seats to MEMO Upholstery in Conroe, TX and I hope to have them next week, we'll see. The leather had to be sent out for perforation and that will take a few days. The center sections of the seats will be perf'd and the outer areas and back will be solid leather with red double stitching. I hope it looks good when it's done!

Neil, everytime I read an update I am so impressed with the amount of attention you are paying to detail...Hats Off to you. One day I hope to have my car be half as nice as yours.

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!

Re: Phase I complete, now Phase II IROC restoration - on to the interior!

Neil; You may need to modify the headlight coers slightly, But i would do 1 of 2 things to make them mount seemlessly. Just an idea, not sure how well it'll woork practically.

You would need an extension along the top of the cover, and i would make them run flat above the headlamps. You could either bolt the covers UP into the hood, or DOWN into the headlight assembly with the use of a bracket or something.

However, mounting them seemlessly will pose a structural problem. You may get rubbing in you headlight buckets, or they may not stand up to highway speed.

Anyways, just an idea, something to think about.

Project lookin real good cant wait to see it finished and driving.

Re: Phase I complete, now Phase II IROC restoration - on to the interior!

To get a "nice" cover you will have to make something 100% custom. Everything on the market is crap. OK for an average car, but for something like that... All current products would knock that car down a peg.

I would get a junkyard nose to try ideas on. Maybe you can take some clear plexi or lexan and heat with a torch and form it into a shape that you want. Or you can have a machine shop machine some clear plastic and then have them polish the crap out of it. I need that kinda thing done at work when I am making windows in prototype ignition switches. Works great.

As for attachment. I would get some industrail magnets like was suggested b 4. The shape of the headlights def doesn't promote anything being attahed up there and thats why I still stand by my opinion that you shouldn't have any kind of cover. (Or just install some kind of permanent one.

nice f-body. although a 4th gen dash kinda ruins it. and the door handles. altough you worked hard on them. but i just think that the lines of the car arent meant to be f#$@ed with... but overall i like it.

I am pretty sure the builder of this "car" chose what he liked. And to quote a favorite movie of mine, "Hey, there aint nuthin' stock about a stock car." I think this car ceased being a 3rd gen when it was split in half and the rear-end widened and tires were put on it that would fit a 767.

You need to tell your brother "Cletus" to come pick up his bolts before he heads back to Dallas and I think he has some parts to drop off for me as well.... Besides, he needs to check out my new Z!

Re: Phase I complete, now Phase II IROC restoration - on to the interior!

Ok, I have been smokin' busy with work and haven't had a chance to work on the car in over a month! Good for work, bad for car progress! Hopefully in a few weeks I will be able to take off a couple weeks and go to town on the car and make a ton of progress.
Anyway, here are some pics of the rear ZO6 caliper adapter bracket for '98 and newer backing plate assembly which is used on my Strange housing. The first few pics show the unmodified backing plate and how it interferes with the caliper.

Now, here are some pics of the Recaro seats which were originally covered in a tan leather and I had recovered with a soft texture black leather (solid and perforated). I still need to have red double stitching added to a few areas on both seats which will happen after I get the car running.

Very nice Neil!I was wondering why nothing new has popped up from you.Any closer to a start up and breaking in of the engine?I would like to see some video footage of that!! I'm probably not the only one either,I know many are watching this thread and would also love to see that! Once again I must say.
AWESOME WORK AND EFFORT!I have a feeling that I'll be seeing your car in hotrod magazine or super chevy.Hope all turns out as you plan. Tim

Well, I would love to give you guys a tentative "start up" date, but I won't because of how busy I am at work. Like I was saying, i'll definitely be taking time off work to wrench on the car day-in and day-out for a couple of weeks! I will make sure to have the engine/trans drop in as well as the first start up on video! That will be an exciting day!

By the way, the wrinkles in the leather (seats) are supposed to fall out, if they don't i'll be taking those bitches back to the upholsterer!

OH HOW SWEET!! As always, good luck man!
Yes the wrinkles should go away,as you said tak'em back if not.I put new upholstery on my second gen seats and a few similar wrinkles. They did go away after about a week.I also let them sit in the sun for a few hours on the weekend that I installed them.

I was looking for some better pics and I can't find any. So, once I get the car back on the ground (after I put the axles in w/ new bearings and w/the brakes) I will take some pics and post them.

Well guys, I won't be working on the car until the new year! I am now spending time with family for the holidays so I am going to relax and hopefully get back to working on the car in mid-January 2008. I can't wait because the heads have arrived along with the valve train. So, it will at least be exciting to take pics of everything an post once I get back home. Until then, everyone have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and may I start this thing in February....cross your fingers!

oh yeah, Merry Christmas...and may getting this done be Neils new years resolution!
LOL, update........there is no update unfortunately. Other than I have the heads and I need to order head gaskets for the 6-bolt provisions. I will call Fel-Pro tomorrow to see if they make them for my bore size. Then I can start assembling the engine .....hopefully soon. I need to get a break from work!!!

OH,now thats too much.
I'd like to see that 96 hp cooper lined up with Neils car on Pinks!

my only other question is: Neil what would you do with that cooper?
You obviously don't have room in the garage for it unless you take out the tool box(have plenty of room then LOL!)

That's FUNNY!!! His Mini Cooper is tiny, I have to pretty much fold my 6'4" self up to get in and out of it! Oh and John, would love to race you on PINKS with the Cooper, bring it!

Actually, I couldn't even push the car at this point because I have both rear axles out (new backing plate and bearings are going on), so rolling is not an option. Maybe by next weekend i'll be able to take him on as a motorless rolling chassy!
