fiberglass hood

here is my dilema i am planning on getting a fiberglass ram air II hood for my 85 trans am but in the process i am losing the original hood off of my car so the hood will have to go on my car immediately. now the hood is primered but not painted i will not have the $$$ to paint the hood for a little while maybe a couple of months even. can anyone tell me how this will affect the hood as far as being outside in the elements since the car isnt garage kept. thanx vinnie

Well, as far as i know (not too much) primer is mainly put on to ensure that the paint has a better surface to stick to so the paint doesnt flake off too soon. But i also think primer is put down first to protect the surface from things such as moisture. So (this is just an assumption here) im pretty sure if you drive with it just primed, not too much will happen, considering its there to protect the material in the first place. Then again im an ignorant kid, id wait for more people to help, just incase

Should not do anything to the hood. I would not use any kind of wax or tire shine stuff on your wheels cuz if it gets on thehood could soak in. And could make for a hell of a time for the painter that does haveto paint it. Just remmber that primmer is porous

from what i understand primer is pourous so it actually takes the other layers of paint to actually seal the surface and to be fully protected so on a metal surface with just primer moisture can still get to the actual metal surface and rust underneath. being as though this is a fiberglass hood i have no idea how it would be affected if at all if its not sealed. will it warp is one of my questions. i have no isea how fragile these fiberglass hoods are and what kind of actual care do they need until they are fully painted.

it shouldn't hurt the hood to run it with just the primer. the only problem you may have is it may have to be stripped down and reprimered in order tobe painted.

i know a guy who has been running a primered fiberglass cowl for at least a year and a half.. should be fine.. you might wanna throw a few coats of primer on there just to make sure it doesnt peel or flake or anything.. if you have to, use spray paint.. i mean you can use spray paint for anything so why not a fiberglass hood??

that sounds pretty good.. i dont see why it would be a bad idea.. hell, my brother's truck has a spray painted hood.. just make sure to coat it evenly and take your time..

you should be fine. any good painter will sand down the top layers of your "factory" hood primer anyways and spray his own primer on top of it to help his brand of paint adhere better.
