which top is better lexan or glass?? I have lexan on my z and was thinking about putting glass on it istead but not sure if thats a good idea what does everyone think,,,,,,,thanks steve

 

I swithced from lexan to glass because my lexan tops squeaked like crazy.

Lexan also gets all those nasty spiderweb cracks in them.

I vote for glass.

 

Glass by all means. I think they're a bit heavier but that's the only drawback.

 

ya small wieght difference but who cares it looks great....less you drop one....

 

i have glass on my 91 but when your going down the road you can hear alot of air comming in. is this normal? yes they are locked. when i had the paint job done i had the guy replace all that weatherstripping around them. any suggestions?? thanks!

 

I have glass on my 84, but they have a lot of scratches on them. Is there any way to remove them? Or at least make them less noticeable?

 

Lexan: Lighter, more prone to age/weathering, harder to find in good condition

Glass: Heavier, more resiliant, more common, more expensive

Air comming in means they are not sealed, adjust the t-top pin recievers and windows. If that doesnt work oil up or replace the seals

Repairing the scratches: Top glass side can be buffed out like a scratched windshield. Underside is just limo tint and very easy to scratch. Have it removed and replaced by a good tint shop. VERY good tint shops can fix small scratches

Ya all my scratches are on the outside, all those years of sitting stuff on them while I worked on the car.

No, if its doing that you should tightn them down over time they work them selfs loose. But back to topic I have glass t tops and I like them, I would go with glass.

 

I tried putting a set of glass ones on my Lexan equipped car last summer, and when I tried to latch them they didn't fit right. Do I need to change out the pin receivers? I have an extra set that are supposedly for glass tops...

 

ya glass is the way to go... if you cant find any i know of some in decent shape at the salvage yard in my town that i could pick up for you.

 

adjust your T-top pin recievers a bit so the T-top is snugged down tighter into the weather stripping. are you sure its not the door weather stripping? thers a bit of a gap there too at the back where the glass seals. mayb you need to adjust your window glass too???

Remove the a-pillar and rear plastic trim pieces that the t-top pins mount through. Once off you'll see two screws that can be loosened allwing you to turn the plate which positions the pin receiver lower, so it compresses the t-top seal more upon installation. As I recall you'll need to re-drill the mount for the screw that attaches the trim panels since that original screw hole will have moved when you rotated the piece.

The A pillar and rear trim pieces mount directly to the adjustable recievers so you wont have to redrill the holes. The move accordingly as you adjust them

 

anyone know the weight difference between glass and lexan t-tops?

 

The hole for the t-top mount moves though so to line that up you have to move the screw hole. Glass weighs more, I don't have my lexan ones here. The glass ones are MUCH nicer looking. FYI, the term is crazing for the cracks in the plastic tops.

 

How do you adjust the pin recievers and windows? umb question maybe im not seeing somehting.. i dont know. but mine need to be but i dont know whow to do it.. Mine dont sit tight in i can move them around. like wiggle them

 

Take the t-top out and look at the holes where the pins go

The recievers are behind those pieces of trim

1 screw up front and a few plastic clips

2 screws in the rear one

Each reciever has 2 x 9/32" screws holding them in place, loosen these and move the reciever down slightly

Put the t-top back in and latch it
If it doesnt squish itself down into the seals (you will feel the small resistance) then adjust further

If it wont latch then you moved them down too far, move them back up some and try again

Once your t-tops are seated good then put your trim pieces back over the recievers

Now drive down the road and listen for noise around your windows, if none or you cant locate the whistle then try the water test to find where its loose

If your window doesnt whistle or leak then your done

If it does then take your door panel off
Note ALL of the small 10mm bolts that hold your window mechanics in place
Each of these adjust the window in a different direction, youll have to tinker with these for a while. Be careful and only move one at a time and only a small amount

 

I like glass but when I installed them (with new weatherstripping) they leaked. I kept the lexan incase I go to the track the only reason I switched was my paint started to peel on them. My glass tops have a mirror like finish on the inside does anyone else have this?
