My headlights have gone crazy

1989 Firebird Formula:

The other night, I shut my car off before I killed the headlights. They went off, but, didn't retract.

The next day, while driving to work, I cycled the headlights on and off several times. They stayed up. When i got to work and shut the ignition off, they went down after a few moments. I stopped at the store on the way home, shut the ignition off, and a few moments later, they want a little more than halfway down.

On a side note, that looked pretty cool. Don't know where I saw it, but I looked at a guys page awhile back who put Grand Prix headlights in his Firebird. They don't open as far, and look really cool. Anyone else see it?

Anyway, after I got home, they stayed up, and haven't gone back down.

Both headlight motors were replaced in 2003, before I bought the car. I had another one go bad in 2005, and put in a new one. I bought the rebuild kit from Lon, but, when I got it pulled apart, it was the motor; everything else was ok.

The headlights do everything exactly in tandem; up, down, 1/2 way up, etc., so, I'm wondering if there's something electrical going on.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

your switch or your relay is going, try jiggling the off switch when they get stuck.. if they move your switch is going bad
otherwise the relay (and/or the control box thingy) i forget if they are a seperate unit or not

Ok, I tried jiggling the switch; no change. Where do I find the relay and the "control box thingy"?

the box is located on the firewall on the drivers side right next to the wiper motor. It has 2 plugs on it that plug straight in.If you still don't know what I'm talking about, open the hood and look at the area where the steering column comes into the eng. comp. if you're standing in front of the car,to your right you will see the relays close to the fender that are mounted to a metal bracket.to the left above the brake booster you will see the headlight door module.
