touch up paint tips?

I got a little bottle of touch up paint with the brush in the bottle, to fix some paint chips on my car.
I'm doing what I would call a heinous job so far. Is there a good way to fill in the little dips left from paint missing? So far I scuffed it a bit with a tiny piece of sandpaper, then brushed over it.
Can I wet sand this later to smooth it all out? After using enough paint to get the surface level of course. What grit? Or maybe just use a polisher with some polishing liquid?
Any tips are appreciated.

Ive had the same problem with small rock chips and one bigger scratch, when I went to the shop who painted my car for advice, They told me to fill it in a little at a time with the touch up, do a thin layer let it dry, the same process until its a little above level and then buff it until it is level and then polish it, for the polish I used scratch out and it did a really good job and unless you know its there and you are really eyeing it you cant see them. Hope this helps some
