Vinyl roof on a trans am..
Hello.Newbie here..
I have bought me a new car: a 82 trans am hardtop.Well I am going to repaint it,and then I got this crazy idea..How about a vinyl roof on on my thirdgen
I have newer seen this on these cars.So here is my question:What do you guys think about this, and is there anybody who has seen this??iIf so post some pics if you got some..Thinking of painting the car silver with effects in it,dark blue stripes over the hood and trunk and a dark blue vinyl roof.lower the car and put on some big shiny chrome wheels.Thats what I have in minds ..

Interesting idea...What would you do for the trim pieces, along the bottom of the vinyl top, on the 'C' pillar? Get trim pieces for a late 60s car, and trim them to fit? Like maybe a '68-ish Chevelle?

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
I just noticed you list that you have a '69 Chevelle SS, so I'm sure you know the trim pieces I'm talking about. I had a '67 Chevelle SS396, that had the trim pieces, but a previous owner had pulled the vinylf off, and painted the roof, but retained the trim pieces, so there were just these stainless trim pieces, but no vinyl.
Could be kinda cool, who knows? Question is, where would you get one? A custom built one? I know a lot of the low-rider crowd do that a lot, and put some kind of trim pieces under it, to simulate the roof contours of a convertible top.

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
if not I will find some aftermarket trim pieces that may fit..I have also thought of a dark red vinyl roof with a silver paint job.The big problem here will be to find someone who is making vinyl roof for a thirdgen

Like this custom one? A lowrider shop could easily do it for you.

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
Im not sure it would work right with the hatch glass the way it is. You'd have all this vinyl, and a big glass hatch coming out the back of it... I just imagine it looking odd. All these older cars had either a notchback style or at least normal flat panel rear window.
Not my style at all though, so maybe Im wrong.

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
be different just cover the whole car in vinyl ... either way just the roof or the whole car it will look hideaous ..... If you do it though I wouldn't post a picture LOL you will surely get flamed pretty hard just my opinion.

Except you'd have a huge piece of glass coming out of the back. If you're dead set on it, get one of the Notchback hatches available online. It'll look better than leaving the huge piece of glass there.

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
If a person doesn't like it, just don't post. No real need to start flaming, if somebody posts a pic of something something else doesn't like. Or just "Not my style." and not getting insulting. Pretty easy to say you don't like something, without flaming & insulting.----------
That's what I was thinking too. The whole reason behind vinyl tops anyways, was to get the convertible look, without the cost.

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
Screw the haters, and build what YOU like. After all, it is your car.
Some people don't like my sequential tail lights, because they are based on a Ford design. The late 60s T-birds.
Oh well. I like it, and I'm looking to please the masses, just me.
Go for it, and post pics, and just ignore the stupid comments that WILL be made, if you post pics of it. Hell, if I wanted it, I'd do it, just to **** people off! LOL

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
I like the idea IF it's on a notchback hatch and IF the vinyl is black. I remember seeing a white iroc several years ago that had a vinyl top that had the ribs in it to make it look like a vert, it looked rediculous.

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
Well the first thing that is going to happen is that I have bought a donorcar.A98 firebird formula ls1.I will take as much parts from that car and put it on my thirdgen.I will use the engine and trans and hopefully most of the interior in it.It would look badass with the new dash in it i think.I will try to use as many thing as possible from the ls1 car.

While the vinyl top isnt necessarily my cup of tea (i dont like the vert look much either) i think different is always cool, as long as its done well. The paint color along with the top color is going to make or break it.
And with an ls1 and 4th gen interior where can you go wrong?
Anyways have fun and make sure to post as much pictures as possible!
P.S. nice chevelle

Re: Vinyl roof on a trans am..
It certainly would be different... But vinyl roofs are somewhat of a nuisance, when we were looking for cars to fix up for our Starsky and Hutch project, the cars we'd seen with vinyl roofs were so rotten it was unbelievable. The glue would go bad, water would get under, rust out the roof, then in no time, the seats were gone, floor, frame. It was rough.
But I guess if you were to do it, you could make sure you used a correct, heat resistant glue, and unlike Ford, actually paint the roof...
