Firewall rust.... low miles car

Hello all, I have a 19898 T/A with 30k miles, but it sat parked in a salt air environment for 8 years. The result is a mint car with rust under the windshield drain. As you can see it is oozing through the seam in the fire wall. Any help would be great. I was planning to rip all the factory sealant off from inside the plenum there, and POR-15 the heck out of it. Again all help is welcome

Doesnt look bad, i'd say you have a decent enough plan in using POR15 on it.

Re: Firewall rust.... low miles car

It looks like mostly surface rust, and should clean up. My uncle, now deceased, was a design enginner for Chevy for many years. He used to joke that GM believed that if you can't see it, it does not need paint on it. There are lots of places on these 80's F-bodies that either never were painted, or just had a faint dusting of paint. My 86 is a mountain car, never in salt air, never driven in the winter, or on road salt. It has 27K miles, and has been stored most of it's life in an air conditioned basement garage. It still developed a couple of surface rust spots. The worst was where the trunk well is spot welded to the rear of the car where the bumper is attached. I cleaned all of the rust off with a wire brush attachment for a grinder, then painted it with with a rust inhibiting primer, then three coats of black enamel. One of my 83's did the same thing where the rear bumper mounts to the back of the car, and where the crimped lip on the leading edge of the hood is. Cleaned the areas up in the same manner, and primered, then painted. That was in 1990. There was no evidence of rust returning when I sold the car in 2003. Most everyone says that you can't stop rust, but you can slow it down. Charles
