Painting my car...

i want to paint my car a nice shiney gloss black. right now its a rusty blue from harsh weather. ive read up about prep work and sanding/wet sanding. i was just wondering if anybody has any brand reccomendations for primer/paint/ and clear coat. i want the best value for my money but i can afford something around 700 or 800. this isnt my daily driver, and i have all the time i could need to work on it so any suggestions would be great!

oh yeah forgot to mention.. its just an 87 rs

Re: Painting my car...

from my research i have found that there are only three major good brands to go with...PPG, Dupont, and House of colors. what ever paint company you go with you should use the same company for primer and clear also. i got an estimate of about $650-$700 in paint supplys for painting my car orange by myself (dupont system) . black will be cheaper but remeber you will need sand-paper, and blocks for prep work also wich will all add up quick..

Re: Painting my car...

I really like working with PPG products, especially the Deltron line. I have used it many times with great results. I would recommend the base/clear. Its pretty forgiving, and you can wet sand out pretty much anything with 1500 or 2000 grit. You would need the DBC (basecoat) and then I would use either the 2021 or 2042 clear. I always lay down epoxy primer first (DPLF) as it is a great sealer and has great corrosion resistance properties. Then I use K36 Prima, which is a primer/surfacer and it wet sands very easily. The K36 will hide a lot of minute flaws and small scratches once wet sanded, leaving a good foundation for your topcoats. You should be able to get the paint for what you have budgeted. Like 86 said though, don't forget other supplies like sandpaper, masking tape, masking paper, and other odds and ends, which can nickel and dime you to death. I'd plan on a couple hundred just for odds and ends.

Re: Painting my car...

Super chevy did an article in 05 using Auto Air Colors paint on a 3rd gen. It was a water based paint that seamed to do well. However I don't know anyone who has ever used it.

I am going to repaint mine this spring in gloss black, I think I'm gonna go with Omni which is a product of PPG.

Is Omni still around? Thought the Shop Line name took over that.

Re: Painting my car...

just an fyi, black base/clear will show every little flaw. and personally I like omni mp282 high build primer, DBC base coat, and 2021 clear coat, although Ive been told 2021 will chip fairly easily, but it sure does look and spray nice!

Re: Painting my car...

i would love to paint my car orange!! its my favorite color orange with white stripes??

anyways im in the process of painting my car also. but i made a huge mistake. i used some cheap primer from a can i bought at a store. now the metal under the primer is rusting out. i gotta fix that up.
i thought i just cover up the spots that was showing bare metal and it wouldnt rust. but now it is. and it looks horrible and ugly.

dont use cheap primer from a can lol. learned the hard way.
i should have posted what you just posted before i started.

Re: Painting my car...

dont use omni......unless you want the clear to look like u rolled a orange down the side when it was wet.......deltron doesnt cost that much more and is a better product.....like dude said, use k36 primer and deltron base and clear....itll come out slick......just be sure to guide coat and block the whole car since your going back black
