Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

Ok Tim, when I get the wheels on I'll take some pics. I just got the seat covers in last month. I haven't got them installed yet because I'm busy buying a new house with a much bigger garage. All my Camaro stuff will be in storage till I close on the new house. Should be the end of Sept.

Just to sand smooth and paint was 3K. I bought all the parts, decals weatherstrip, etc. I did most of the dis and re-assembly. Mikey did all the body work, masking, painting and bought the paint and primer. The wheels to refinish them was about a grand. Total is around 6k not counting new tires and interior($1700) So just off the top of my head I've got about 12k in a car thats now worth about 7K. All this started as replacing the weatherstripping for a daily driver! And beware, new paint changes other things in your life too, like... sell the house and buy a bigger garage with another house!(about 140K) So guys, be careful out there. This car habit ain't for the weak of heart. Seriously, I'm in the middle of moving and all the IROC's parts are in storage, She's sitting in the driveway of the old house(here) waiting for the closing to occur to move to the new garage. My Corvette is in this garage. I got the carpet in and one seat in the IROC and have to work about 30 to 40 hrs overtime to make this all work. So she's not done yet. I'll make it up to y'all with pics later I promise! Thanks Guys!

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

Yeah, new paint is nice but.. I was becoming the scary old man that would run out on the porch every time I heard a kid on a bike! Now that she's inside I can relax, a little. All my parts are still in storage. I've got to work on the new house and it's killing me. She should be ready for the spring. Thanks guys, and I will post more pics as the process continues.

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

The black stripe is actually above a Gold stripe brother! All pics are from my camera/phone, Not the greatest quality. The freaking wheels came out awesome. I found a shop to mount and spin balance the new tires that appreciatted the time and cash I've spent on this project. No scratches, stick on weights, good work. They even apologized for getting soapy water on them when they were mounted. Now I need brakes, I can't bolt those gorgous wheels onto rusty rotors. This thing is never ending! Thanks for the replies!

Your car looks great ! After looking at your car I now miss my old red 88 IROC-Z. I love how you kept it all stock with the stripes and decals. It looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor.

i cant seem to find and easy way to remove the sticky glue/tape they used on the door to keep the bumper trip on.the clear coat on the car was flaking away bad and it was utterly ugly to look at with dull black paint and flakey white all over. after im done painting it. im going to take it to a buddy of mine who owns a detailing shop so im going to take it to him to make the car shine real good
Awwww.. Poor chilled buddy Yeah. This car deserves to have some shiny treatment again.

Well. All I can say is, the whole body paint job was a job well done. A great example of DYI car paint from home. How was she now? Did you add some oem & stuff already?

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

Getting mine painted sometime in the summer. I am getting all little stuff together to try and spread out the cost. I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for the decal and emblem kit you used. Price and where you got them? Anything you could help me with would be great.

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

Welcome Jester, the decals came from Pheonix Graphics. I don't remeber the price, I think around $400. The quality is excellent. They are GM resto approved. Whats your car?

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

I picked up a 1988 Iroc with 68000 miles and got a pretty good deal on it. The one set back was that the paint looks pretty good, but when you get right up on it and look closely you can see the dust in the paint. Its black and gold so the little imperfections really show up.

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

The emblems were separate, came off E bay. The sellers name was Ozpont I believe. Technically not an exact copy but real nice. I think they were like 40 bucks.

Fronts done, working on rebuilding the rear calipers. They were all frozen from sitting.

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

MAN! looks just like my car!! only one difference......after i finished painting mine i took it to have it inspected, AND of course i lowered it by about 2 inches.......AND the mechanic who drove it in the shop ran the front air dam right into the lift sticking up a few inches off the floor......didn't wreck the ari dam, but it goofed up the paint on either side......i didn't want them painting it so i'll just redo it when i get enough "other" fixes to do.....car look great though!

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

Hey all, It's Saturday and I got the whole day to work on the IROC! So far I replaced the fuel pump, emergency brake cables, brake lines, calipers. The front wheels are on, the rear diff is still out. I got a new Dynomax exhaust system going on also with a new high flow cat. I'm getting there, Slowly....

Pics later.

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

It's a good feeling getting things done on your car. It felt great to get my IROC painted. I chose GM Red Jewel Tintcoat, and it was beautiful, in my opinion. Here's a link to some slideshows of my 87 before and after the GM Red Jewel paint. http://www.slide.com/r/Ov9XNJvF5T9v-...&view=original

Here's a pic of it the day it got home from the shop. I think it looked sweet.

I sold the 87 for $5000.00 and then later bought my 86 because I missed my car a lot.

I'm working on an LT1 swap on my 86 right now. I recently finished cleaning and painting the engine bay. Here's my thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...ver-v-8-a.html

Re: Finally Painting my IROC!

Got the exhaust on and the brakes bled. Had a problem with the timing now resolved. One little creep closer to the road. (Legally!)
