Inner Fenderwall

Been lurking on the website for years, first post. I tried searching and couldn't find anything about inner fenderwalls, not the plastic liner but the actual metal piece behind the fender. Anyone know where to get a replacement?

You'd probably have to cut one off a junkyard car.

Re: Inner Fenderwall

That is what I was dreading - I have been able to find replacement parts for everything so far except this.

Thanks.

Re: Inner Fenderwall

It's not really a replaceable part, it's a welded-in structural member.

Re: Inner Fenderwall

Yeah... This was my first car and I really have no other option because I can't get rid of it - no matter how much the wife threatens me.

Re: Inner Fenderwall

When I was in college I lost the fenderwall skirt and didn't have the money to replace it, and then I drove it in Ohio for the next few years without it. Well the salt they use in the winters caused it to rust out. It is structurally safe, I think, but now that I have the resources and am restoring the car I figured I should replace it.

I am at work now but will upload pictures when I get home.

Re: Inner Fenderwall

are you talking about the front or rear? The front would be a serious problem to replace because that's the structural section that the strut mounts to. If it's the rear, it's less of an issue but still a major task to replace it. You're more than likely better off repairing/patching what you have than cutting out the entire section and replacing it. The pictures will definitely help out in understanding the situation.

Re: Inner Fenderwall

The front drivers side. I have everything out, strut, mounts, brake booster, resovoir, etc. I guess that's good to know, and probably explains why i haven't been able to find anyone who has done it before.

Re: Inner Fenderwall

Cut one out of a junk car but cut it with extra material

You can drill out the spot welds on your rusted one but some cutting will still be necessary

Its time intensive but not THAT bad of a job

Re: Inner Fenderwall

I have the pictures, they are kind of hard to make out but most of the rust is at the seams so it would be tough (for me) to patch.

Image 28 is standing at the front looking back towards the cabin.
Image 29 is looking straight up at the strut mount.
Image 30 is standing at the front looking forward to the nose.

I think I am going to try patching first and if that doesn't turn out, I am going to try cutting it out and just replacing it.

Re: Inner Fenderwall

Thats pretty mild

Grind out the remaining damage and weld in a few plates

Re: Inner Fenderwall

I'm with Pocket. remove all of the undercoating and remove any loose pieces to really see how much damage you're working with. From the surface, it doesn't look like replacing the entire inner fender is required at all... which is very good news for you!
