door handle prblem

hi, i just bought a 1989 gta, and the rod that is usually connected to the underside of the exterior door handle came loose, and is now only attached at a bracket opposite to the looped end of the rod. the rod is loose, but has not caused me any door problems, nor does it seem as if it's connected to anything major. so my question is, is it safe to just cut the rod off? someone told me that this will disable the door from being opened from the outside of the car, but i don't believe them, as i'm almost positive it's not connected to anything important. should i cut it off? or should i drop $10 + labor for a new handle? any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

A good rule of thumb is that if something is connected its probably important. I would just fix the handle properly and be done with it, if you rig it you'll just have problems again.

Welcome to TGO. If it weren't important, why would GM go to the expense?

Re: door handle prblem

I would just buy a new handle and replace it yourself. Get a Haynes manual or search on these forums for the correct way to do it. I replaced both of mine last year. It isn't hard if you have skinny arms and/or a little patience.
