A hole in the wheel well, what is the purpose?

A hole in the wheel well, what is the purpose?
Not exactly sure where to post this one at, but since this is a hole in the body, I will post the question here.
While working on my latest Firebird project I ran across a small hole that is behind the Strut and goes right through to the engine compartment. It is about the size of my index finger. This hole exists on both the passenger side and drivers side, and as I recall exists in every Firebird I have ever owned, not sure about my Camaros. but can’t remember noticing it with them. That makes 6 Firebirds that all had this hole, some were filled in with a caulk type of substance, but the hole was there nonetheless.
Does anyone know the purpose of this hole?

i dont think cruuise control needs a hole..i could be wrong tho. i have never seen this hole u speak of, but i have never been looking for it. pics would be nice.
