removing rear hatch or tint?
removing rear hatch or tint?
hi i have an 84 z28 and im trying to get the old crappy tint off the rear window. i was told to soak it in amonia for about 2 hours and it should come off. i cant really do this though with the window on the car. so 2 questions. any easier way to remove the tint without damaging the defroster lines? and if not, could i mess anything up taking the whole hatch off? do i just remove the 4 bolts at the top and take off the struts then lift it off? and do i need anything special putting it back on? thanks

One tip here: Don't remove the bolts that hold the glass to the hinge, remove the bolts that hold the hinge to the body. The ones that hold the glass on are easy to damage. You've gotta take one piece of interior plastic off (the center piece at the rear of the headliner), but its only a few screws.

They make solvents that you can spray on, and simply wipe away the old glue. If the tint is still on there, you can run a razor blade between the defroster lines, and then spray it, wait, then peel the tint, and then wipe the glue away. Check pep boys. They bought it in bulk at the shop I worked at, so I wouldn't know how to get you the exact stuff we used. It worked great though.

Re: removing rear hatch or tint?
I just removed all the old crappy tint on my back window last weekend, on a warm day (85+) take a black grabage bag, cut it to fit the window, get a bottle of windex, soak the window and apply the bag on the window, the windex creates a suction and the bag stays right on, close the door and roll the windows up so your just making the car that much hotter, wait about an hour and a half, and every 30-40 mins and respray, the tint literally peels off with no effort, just take off the garbage bag a little at a time tho, otherwise it will dry up and you'll have to redo the rest of the window
----------
also for if you have any "glue" left over, get some #000 steel wool, i picked some up from home depo for about 2-3 bucks.. but with my method you shouldn't really have any left over as it peels off clean
