To blend or not to blend black car
My daughters car is at the final stage of repair from her second accident. Base/clear black paint job was just a few months old when it got hit again.

The replacement door, fender and vent were painted off the car. I took it back to have the rear quarter patch panel painted as the final step and was asked to sign a paper aknowledging the spot repair would be visible. He even said there was a possibility the edge might lift and peel if I were to wheel the car out down the road. Is he being overly cautious or should I have the whole rear quarter/roof repainted as he suggests?

Well to be honest. When they paint the quarter or blend. The quarter continues on the roof panel, if they know what they are doing then you can easily blend it within the adj panel, but the top of the quarter might be alot better looking then the roof considering the clear coat that is there allready. Its really a question to ask yourself. Then if you do paint the roof complete your going to run into the same problem on the opposite side of the repair.

blend into the roof, you won't need to re-base coat the roof, only re-clear it (and the a-pillar) so its not alot of extra work, and when done properly you can hardly tell whats repainted and whats not.

When my car got tagged on the left rear quarter the shop repainted the repair area then re-cleared the entire back half of the car. You can't tell where the repair was done.

Yes, white car seen in my avatar. The shop did blend the paint on the quarter panel, then hit the whole back half with fresh clear. While they were at it, I had them repaint the rear deck as well as a new fiberglass wrap-around spoiler. It all matches pretty well.
I know black can be tougher to do that with, though.

If the paint code is WA8555....there is no need to blend. You can panel paint that all day long.
If your getting it spotted in....there is no guarentee that it will hold up. In order to do be safe...and to know that you won't have problems down the road....I would get it repaired the right way...which is to R&I all the parts that need to be R&I'd...paint the black...then reclear it all.

R&I'd?
If I have the whole rear quarter roof section repainted, I'll be removing all the trim, lights and bumper cover. The less to be masked, the less there will be overspray on.

Yeah..."R&I" means "Remove and Install". If you have to repaint a door...you might have to R&I the weather stripping, mirror, side molding...door handle. You get a much better finished product...with no tape lines and alot less chance of peeling. Plus....the techs get paid to R&I parts

Re: To blend or not to blend black car
The only way you could get away with a spot repair on a black car is if the area has a sharp line such as a door edge or body molding that would help hide the edge of the new paint. There's supposed to be some new types of paint out that makes this blending easier (a buddy of mine is a painter) but even he says he wouldn't try it on a black car.

Re: To blend or not to blend black car
if the car is black...gm wa8555...and you had the fender and door painted....why should the 1/4 panel have to be painted if there was no damage to it....gm black matches real good...i never had a customer complain and i panel shoot that thing all day long....and if you are going to go with the 1/4 paint job...then pant the whole back of the car...cant blend black....at least i dont...

Sounds like my daughter needs to save up her pennies and get the whole rear painted.
