sometimes it does its maybe a 50/50 chance..
but anytime i raise or lower them it makes a

kachunk kachunk kachunk kachunk sound for about 5-10 seconds

when it doesnt come all the way up it goes maube 1/4 the way up and its REALLY easy to lift not like its stuck or anything...

Re: head light doesnt always pop up

mine does the exact same thing on my left headlight it is the headlight motor the plastic gear that turns to raise and lower the headlight has broken teeth you have to replace the headlight motor to fix it.

sounds to me like you need a rebuild kit for the motors. There are 3 bushings inside the motor assembly that are notorious for crumbling apart and causing the headlight not to work properly. He sells a nice rebuild kit with good instructions.I bought the kit for my car a few years ago,and haven't had a problem since.

Re: head light doesnt always pop up

Mine did that.....I converted my plastic gears to all metal ones, It works great and makes less noise.

I bought my gear of ebay....it was not cheap becasue I bought the main gear, then had to buy another that the seller had on his website. I am happy though.

You probably took the actuator out of the headlight motors frame right? There's these little rectangular things that have to be touching the actuator. This is what gives it power. They go into these little sockets on the side of the actuator and behind them are supposed to be springs. There are two springs, one for each side. They are a big *** pain to get back into the holes and keep them there while you slip the actuator back in. maybe this your problem?

Re: head light doesnt always pop up

I have a question, my head lights on my 89 both open up perfect. They just won't close, I have to manualy lower them. Is this still a gear problem? Does the motor work in foward and reverse, or does the motor move in only one direction and continually rotate the gear? Just wondering if I have a motor issue or just need to use the rebuild kit and replace the gears?

No that is not a symptom of a bad gear or bad bushings. It could be one of two things. It could be a bad headlight control module or a blown tail light fuse. The fuse is the easier of the two to diagnose. If the tail light tests good then unplug the connectors from the headlight control module and remove it from the bracket (use a flat-blade screwdriver between the left side of the bracket and module). Cup the module in your hand flat-side down and slap it on the floor squarely. If the relay in side is sticking this should free it temporarily. If this fixes it get yourself a spare module since the relay will stick again. Sinc you have a 89 you'll need a module form a 1987-89 Firebird or 87 Fiero. Unfortunately I'm out of stock at the moment.

Re: head light doesnt always pop up

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a try and see what happens. Tail light fuse is good, so I'm going to try your tip on the module, either way think I will look for a new module anyway.

Thank again
