Painting Engine Bay - Paint & Rust Fix, Need ADVISE

I'm painting the engine bay black (to hide the colour change). I was going to sand down the light surface rust (with 240 grit) and then use black Tramclad to cover.

For the bottom of the rad support member, I was going to use POR 15.

Is this the way to go (I have never done this before )??

Can I just paint on the POR 15 or do I need to prep (with what)??

Need some overall advise......THANKS

This is what I am working with.

That should work... Depending on the desired quality of your finished product 240 sand scratches may show... For a super smooth finish you might consider following up with 600 or 800. If your primary goal is to remove rust then have the parts media blasted, Clean, Prime & Paint... If Money is an issue and the car will not see any weather it will not be as critical.

POR-15 is an awesome product, IIRC you have to clean the grease and loose rust off first and then brush it on... it will smooth out as it cures and wear old clothes that your willing to throw away. If you get it on your hands it will not wash off with anything after it dries it has to wear off with time. THe rougher the surface the better POR will stick.

Read the POR 15 literature it will help you out... You might consider actually POR ing everything and then Prime and Paint. But you really want to remove anything you do not want POR on forever... IIRC POR is primable and Paintable, if it is aged POR I want to think that they had special Primers for that. POR also comes in a couple of colors including CLEAR for those metal parts you want to look like... metal..

Good luck and have fun...

John (Okfoz)...thanks, great info.

It there any difference between Tremclad and Dupli-color? Is one better than the other as a spray on?

My battery tray is in almost the same condition. Looks worse from underneath.
