I've been shaved for 2 years now. Got the heavy duty 45 lb solenoids and poppers. My alarm controls each door individually and works great ! Not to mention the added security, when my car was stolen, they broke the lock cylinder below the handle to gain entry, so I deleted them. Nothing you can do to stop a thief, but the trick is to make it harder for them and slow them down. My alarm has an LCD screen that will page me from up to a 1/2 a mile away.

 

it seems to be a general consensus that this is a pretty cool idea, it looks good makes security a little tighter ect.

and i agree it really makes our cars look a little cleaner

and omgwtf the touch sensors would be amazing!!!! just tough your window in a special spot and bam...open, the price is a little much but the idea is wonderfull,,,..... anybody who does this should definitly keep us all updated

 

and on another note....using those touch sensors you could replace everything.... replace your power window rolldown buttons with a flat peice of plastic with the buttons drawn on.... just touch em and down they go.it could be used for anything, start, a/c or heat, hatch open, door opening ect. the possibilities are endless......

 

this really does open up the mind for new ideas to a custom showcar..... Thanks guys!

 

Actually, it looks like it removes ALL security. No key hole? No lock. And touch thing means ANYBODY can open your doors. It isn't a fingerprints scanner.

i don't mean the touch opener, or even the buttons, but with the remote popper only you can open the doors with the remote, which makes it hardes for people to break in.... at least in my opinion

Here's my shaved car. Sorry about the picture. Once again its just a picture of a picture cause i'm deployed overseas. Sprayed the clear and took the picture the day I had to leave.

 

i shaved the door handles and antenna on my 84. i am just going to keep a hatch key in my wallet incase i leave the remote inside the car at some point. You can also use a hide a key somewhere underneath the car so the hatch is accessable. Assuming you are nimble enought to make your way up to the inside handle.

 

Actually, the scratches and swirls arent too much of a problem cause the car is a weekend warrior and doesnt get driven but maybe 1500 miles a year now. Its really nice to be able to protect it.

However, in the first 3000 or so miles since paint, the car has already been damaged due to one night in San Antonio and theives. I also accidently put a little scratch in the clear when putting up the lawnmower.

I already wet sanded the little spot with some 1000 and now I just need to get ahold of a polisher and some good polish/wax to rebuff the spot.

 

GodSpeedGTA; I've always thought yours is one of the nicest GTA's I have ever seen... Just, BAD A**!

 

I agree, GodspeedGTA, that car is absolutely beautiful. I can only hope mine turns out half as well...

 

few things, didn't like not having a door handle as i get older.

whoever said body work is an import thing earlier in this thread is making a judgement that isn't right, body work is just that. there maybe tasteful and not so much but that's the hobby.

There is a Mazda car in my work parking lot with a shaved handles/lamborghini door combo. It looks less than satisfying in real life, I shall snap a picture one of these days.

Thanks for all the compliments guys...I am really working on finishing the car to be one of the most outstanding GTAs in the entire world. There is a long road ahead but I am making progress.

I should have CTS-V brakes w/14" rotors (and 12" or so out back) on the car by Feb. or so. Then I plan on finishing my suspension build up. Once again, your compliments are def 75% of what keeps me going.

 

uh yeah a good looking car, and a good looking girl, *drool*, if only it was a 5 speed, perfection.

but hopefully i'll get to shaving my car this winter, also thought about thrwing in some t tops, if you could say that about that much work.... so while its a snowin my car will simply be in pieces... literally

I never developed the pictures of me rebuilding the top end, but I do have my trusty Z28 shirt my dad bought in 1981 that has permanent grease stains from that job haha

It's actually a custom color called Carmine Red, car was repainted for first time in April 08, inside wheelwells in engine bay though weren't repainted and show that that's probably the original color, nothing else on car is anything but the newly repainted red or that engine bay color, so yea, probably originally 75 paint code, but not any longer. Thanks for the compliment too : )

-to keep on topic, my fender/antenna is shaved, and back bumper blended in so it looks like there was no place for the rear decals/Iroc logo.

I may have misworded that. Its blended in so that it doesnt look like there was ever a place for the 'Iroc' logo on the right side. I would have blended the whole thing in, but if someone pushed in on my bumper, I wouldnt want the polyester to crack. Guess I could have cut the indented length out and then fiberglassed from behind and did a real thin flex poly glaze over the long area. Hmm, might do that in the spring.

I know I saw some posts on here where people had mentioned shaving the side marker lights. You could try that, but check your local laws first. Also, I was gonna shave the side mirrors off but unfortunately I won't pass inspection without them. My original plan for the body work on the car involved shaving everything I could. That included the side mirrors, door handles/locks. antenna, RS emblems on the GFX, the body side mouldings, the camaro emblem on the nose, the RS emblem and that entire indent/stripe on the rear bumper, and the gas filler door. I was also gonna try and smooth the GFX into the body so there was no transition from body panels and GFX. I had wanted there to be almost no seams or lines anywhere on the car, nothing to take away from the overall lines of the car.

 

I shaved my face, and my arm by accident with a wire wheel on a grinder that slipped

 

thats actually a pretty cool idea to smooth out the transitions between the gfx and the body, i'll have to look into that,

does anybody have any pics of the side lights being shaved? i wouldn't mind taking a look at that

Here's another I did to illustrate the "shave everything" concept that I was talking about 2 posts ago. I took off the mirrors, antenna, door handles, marker light, and smoothed the ground effects seam and the line between the fender and bumper cover.

If only real body work was as quick and painless as photoshop bodywork.

 

To the afore mentioned "shaved everything" concept. Im really glad you are a true third gen-er and appreciate the body lines of our cars so much (as do I) but I think shaving the side mirrors is taking it a bit too far. To me, and maybe just me, a car without mirrors sticks out like a sore thumb in a bad way.

Its like a car without a front bumper or something. Also, smoothing the gfx is serious work and very few can pull it off correctly. Sure, everyone can smear some filler over the gfx and smooth it out but the first time they flex the filler is gonna crack somewhere. Not that it cant be done, but you really have to know what you are doing! ESP. if you want it to last more than a year.

I think it did wonders for my car to have the side markers shaved. I hear everyone who are concerned about the law or saftey but I doubt you will run into trouble from either. If someone cant see your car (at night) with your headlights/taillights on and hits you then you can bet your **** two side markers werent going to change anything.

 

Thanks GodspeedGTA. I really want to smooth the GFX out, but I'm not sure how to do it properly so it lasts and that is the main reason I haven't done it yet. My camaro is my daily driver in the spring/summer/fall and I don't want it to crack. The reason I haven't shaved the mirrors and the side marker lights are because it won't pass PA inspection without them. I had toyed with the idea of using some strong magnets to mount the mirrors to the doors to pass inspection but I don't know. I do use them a lot, I just don't think they flow very well with the lines of the car. I think they are too rounded on the front. They should be more angular, like the nose of the camaro. I may try to reshape the mirror housing at some point, as I have 2 spare mirrors to play with. Also, instead of shaving the marker lights I may try to find some smaller marker lights at th JY. I remember seeing something, I think it was a VW Jetta or Golf that just had small squares for the side marker lights. They were only maybe 1.5" square? If I could fill in the marker light hole and mount them so they are flush with the body I may go that route. In that case, I'll probably also use some Nightshades paint to "smoke" them since the car will eventually be painted black.

 

I think smoking them would be the best route for sure. As far as the gfx, you would prob be one of the first to do it with our cars but be prepared for a lot of work or money depending on how you have it done.

Have you looked into finding a set of the euro paddle mirrors? They were kinda rare and i believe only used on birds that were sold in Europe (euro option). If you look long enough you could prob snag a set. I do agree that the harder lines of a camaro really dont go well with the rounded mirrors. They are best for the birds esp. 91-92.

With some time and practice you could easily fab up your own set of mirrors per your design and have something you like and one-off mirrors. That or the paddle mirrors are your best bet I think.

 

I shaved my antenna, gas cap, and the holes for my wing. These are the only two that show anything on this computer.

Any body work on the car will be done by me as I can't afford to pay someone to do it. Besides, I bought the car fully intending to drive it in the summers and work on it over the winters. I know it'll be a lot of work, but if I can find a way to do it right, I'll put the time in. If not, then it was a great idea while it lasted.

As far as the paddle mirrors, no thanks. IMO those are one of the worst things GM ever did to these cars. Right behind cancelling production of the Camaro/Firebird and those ugly redesigned headlights on Camaros towards the end of production. If I can find time to learn to fiberglass I'm going to give custom mirrors a try along with some interior pieces. I'd love to fiberglass up a custom dash/dash pad to resemble the new Camaro's.

 

How about for the girl?

 

i'll have to look inyo my regulations for the side lights, i want to shave those, the mouldings, the door handles, the antenna. i wasn't sure if i wanted to put in a fuel cell so i'm not sure if i want to shave the gas cap.

couldn't you possibly weld the seams to the gfx? it might be how you could shave the gaps, not sure how it would work,

on the subject of the mirrors, i saw an 60's camaro with only the driver side mirror, and i must say, it looked pretty damn cool without the mirror. might be an idea to only shave one, so you have both looks and functionality

Side mirrors aren't required IF........

You are required to have 1 center rear view mirror, or the 2 side view mirrors. Not all 3.

So as long as the center mirror is there, the side views can be removed.

But as for the side marker lights, those are required. No LEGAL way around that.

Yep, that's why I have the PA Inspection regs bookmarked on all my computers at home and my computer at work. I am constantly checking them. I also checked with the guy who does my yearly inspections, he's just a small local mechanic so he's pretty cool about my asking him questions and stuff. He's even called me up while the car was on the lift and told me what it needed to pass and let me take it home and fix it myself.

The reason older cars like that 60's Camaro can get away with 1 mirror on them is because that's all they came with from the factory. It's just like seat belts. Older cars didn't come with shoulder belts in the back, and if you go back to the 60's the front seats didn't either. Earlier cars from the 40's for example didn't have front belts either. They aren't required to be updated to pass inspections, but you can't remove the seatbelts from our cars. Not that I would anyhow, just an example.

I'm not sure you could weld the GFX to the car, as you would be trying to weld plastic to metal. I would think they would just melt.
Maybe if I could get them soft enough I could stretch or smooth them out so the ends aren't as thick and therefore not as noticeable. I have some broken GFX in the garage, I'll have to try that maybe.
