Wheel Locks

Hello, I bought a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro RS back on April 20th. The problem is that is came with 16" Boyds wheels. They have wheel locks on them and I don't have the lock. I know most people weld a bolt onto them and then get them off. I don't have acces to a welding unit at all. Is there some sort of ******* way I can do this.

Re: Wheel Locks

check with snap on or a tire shop they have a special socket that will take most of them off.

Re: Wheel Locks

Yep, you can call Boyd and see if you can get the lock for the lug nut, or even autozone has these.
But what these are is, a exctractor for lug nuts. Ask at the counter and they should know what you are talking about.

Re: Wheel Locks

depending on the type of lock nut (mc guard ext), i use a 12 point a tad smaller then the nut and a BFH and beat it onto the nut. the extractors work pretty well for some syles, but not so good on the splined type unless u get the master extractor kit.

Re: Wheel Locks

Yah. Just beat a 12 point socket on the lock lugnut and twist it off with cheater bar. After the lug comes off use a screw driver and a hammer to push it out of the socket. I did that on my '72 Nova. Use a craftsman or snap-on socket and take it back and get a new one if you mess up the teeth on the socket.

Re: Wheel Locks

Similar situation. After much drilling, cussing, etc., I gave up & went
to the local NTB, humbly begging for help. "No Problem" said the
the counterman (recognizing me as a loyal repeat customer -- other
stories...), "just take it around back, & Jackson can help you out."
Whereupon Jackson took the appropriate Impact socket (the heavy
black kind), BFH'd it over the lug, and then put the air wrench to it.

Sidebar: If it's that simple to remove them, how effective could
they ever have been as theft deterrents?

Re: Wheel Locks

Wheel lock are only a problem to the owner of the car. If someone wants your wheels he is going to get them, wheel lock or not. So forget about replacing the locks in the future.

They keep the non professional thieves from steeling your wheels, same as an alarm, won't stop a pro, but will deter most of the rest.
