patch panels
Re: patch panels
the thickness of the sheet metal on the car is 38 thoulsands so that puts you in the 20 to 18 gauge range. you can get it at menards and home depot, however i would do a search for metal superstores in your area. here in chicago i found a metal super store and it was only 1/4 to 1/2 the price of what menards or home depot were selling it for.
i wouldn't go any thinner than 20 gauge, (i.e. 21,22,23 ect.) unless you enjoy burning though the sheet metal, or are a professional welder.

Re: patch panels
Any local bodyshop would have a scrap pile. Even bent hoods can have some pretty big areas of mostly flat steel.
Re: patch panels
I hear you on that burning through the metal deal. I am a certified welder for structural steel, not sheet metal, should be fun! I did stick weld the roof back onto my stock car, that was fun. NOT!
