Are there any rear hatch drain kits out on the market today for the f-bodies? I know the corvettes have them. I want to prevent my interior from getting soaked in the rear.

 

Maybe I don't get what your asking. But if you are getting water in the rear, you have a weatherstrping/spoiler/metal issue.

Out of the three 3rd gens that I own, none of them have problems with water comming into the back.

 

6 3rd gens so far for me.....No water issues, with good hatch rubber in place.

 

Yes I have been getting a little water in the rear. I found out that it empties into the rear compartment on drivers side. The cardboard became damp and is warped. Will new weatherstripping cure this?

 

It should....But does your hatch even FULLY close? Do you have a pull-down motor or hafta slam it shut?

 

Yes the hatch fully closes and the pull down motor does its job.

 

Check the sealant in the wheel well. There is a place right behind the box where about 6 pieces of sheet metal come together that usually has a huge glob of body sealant covering a hole about 1/8" around. I have the same problem where water keeps pooling back there and haven't been able to get any body sealant yet to plug it up. The thing is that the wheel splashes water up the rear of the well and right through this hole like a squirt gun.

 

Hmm.. The inside of my wheel wells look brand new as if it just came off the factory lot. Its black with the undercoat spray and it shines like new. I will have to take a look to see. However this happened when I had the supposedly "weatherproof" car cover on the car. We received some bad rain last week and to top it off snow here in Atlanta. Thats when I noticed a little puddle of water in the rear compartment. The carpet however is dry.

 

I was getting some water in at the joint where the glass and deck lid come together at the edge where it hits the seal. It was the little plastic joint cover that smooths out that area. A little extra sealer and that was cured. Making sure the seal is clean helps and a little rubber conditioner doesn't hurt either. Now all I get is rainwater running in when I open the hatch all the way. And this being Seattle it tends to rain ... on occasion.
To help narrow down the search, if it's clean water it usually came from above. If it's dirty water it usually came from below.

 

Its clean water since i don't drive my car in the rain. I will take a look.

 

LOL **** i found a large puddle back there and the whole compartment behind the d/s wheel is all rusting like no tomorrow

i to it to several glass shop to have the rear window resealed and they all told me there was nothing wrong with the seal so not i'm going to try testing it all for leaks with some food coloring at some just to double check

 

With all the rain we have been getting lately here in Georgia.. its not leaking in the rear on my IROC. It could have happened at the drive through car wash somehow.

 

Just a thought, do you have t-tops? I've had water go to some strange places thru the T's.

 

Drive Through Car Wash????? Never. I would also check the sealant from the decklid and hatchglass, I had the same leak right into that compartment on the driver side. That's what it was.

 

From the outside maybe, pull your interior plastic and carpet for the whole back half. Get ready for a suprise.

I did that because I wanted to see if there were any obvious leaks from the t-tops etc...

 

The whole underside of the car is rust free. Its so clean you can eat off it. I plan on pulling the rear plastic and carpet one day to see how it looked under there as well. I hope you are wrong

 

Nope, mine looked like that too, like brand new from the outside.
Once the interior was gutted it was a bunch of work.

Anyone reading this that has never removed all the junk in the rear to look thinking it fine, as it looks nice from the outside, ignorance is bliss

After that last post you made.. I will be going out this weekend and pulling the rear plastic and carpet to take a look. I will post pics as well. Hopefully I will not be in the same situation as you. The guy that did the resto job on my car said he did it from the ground up etc.. The quality of what I have seen in the 2 months I have owned it looks immaculate. I will post back then. You have got me worried now...

 

Yeah i remove that cardboard box or what was left of it and everything is rusting from the inside out

and trying to figure out how the heck i'm going to get
my fat *** in there to clean and or treat it all

 

Well I pulled out the rear plastic but not the whole back half. I was able to get a look inside and found that everything is clean and free of rust from the inside as well. I also took a peek behind the cardboard box for the storage compartment in the rear.. and it looked clean as well. Here are some pics of what I took. This car had 84k original miles on it when I picked it up. It now has 86k miles on it. Maybe that played a role as well as the previous owner telling me that he never drove it in the rain. This is not a daily driver for me since I have an SUV I drive. This car is clean as you can tell from my pics as well as the pics I posted in members camaros.

 

Wow, 87_Injected, that is one clean IROC! What part of Atlanta are you in? I think I'd notice a car like that if I saw it driving around...

87_Injected...clean looking interior! Its nice to find that kind of metal under the carpet. I have a little dampness in the hatch of my 86...and I was surprised to find no rust when I had my interior out. The car was garage kept all its life until I got it. Im going to replace the weatherstrip and hope that takes care of it. Its been an Ohio car all its life...now a PA car. Something you can try... Remove all the interior in the back. All the plastics, carpet etc. Toss some baby powder around. Close the hatch and lay inside. Then have someone outside hit it with a hose. You'll find where the water is coming in...

The original owner had everything sealed and coated when he got the car. The entire underside is coated in a waxy like coating. They also did about 6" of the hood near the front lip area, as well as all of the engine bay. I removed it all from the engine bay because I wanted to paint...but the rest I left alone. Figured it was doing a good job so far.

The stuff is sticky and kinda gross...but it works.

I plan to remove the entire rear plastic and carpet possibly this summer. I sure don't want that to happen to me.

Keep going, under the back seats is another spot it iwll rust bad and show no signs under neight, Long with up on front.

That jute padding that is used factory is a spongue that holds water and rust your car from the inside out.
