Anyone ever had the tumblers replaced in door lock cylinders?
The reason why I ask is because my door handles and locks have been painted over when the car was painted.
I'm swapping the handles to brand new black ones and need to replace the painted lock cylinders with new ones as well.
I can go to the auto parts store and pick up the cylinders, but they will obviously come with new keys. The key that opens the door on my TA also unlocks the tops and the rear cargo glovebox.
So my question is, have you ever replaced the tumblers in the door locks? I'm thinking about taking my key and new locks to a locksmith and let him re-key it, I'm sure that can be done correct?
A cheaper solution would be for me to try and swap the tumblers out, I just don't want to get myself into a mess....any ideas on that?
Thanks

Post #10 in the following link will show you an expanded view of the area in questions:

BTW, removing part #5 for me personally was one son of a gun.

Thanks James, I was mostly meaning the tumblers inside the lock cylinder...the part inside the cylinder that is unique to whatever key you used to open the door.

Yes a good locksmith can set one up to work on the same key. My father is and my grandfather, was a locksmith. They are whats called a side bar cylinder. Come to think it is nice he sets up all my cars for free!

The black cover and spring loaded doors on the cylinders can be replaced seperately without messing with the rest of it. Most of the time when you purchased a new GM lock cylinder it came disassembled and without keys and needed to be coded to your existing key. It was actually pretty simple to put one together if you had the parts.

Thanks! I'm going to pick up a set of cylinders and see if I can swap the tumblers out myself, unless I can find a new set of black covers first.

Check with a local locksmith to see if they have the covers. The OEM cylinders have the cover crimped over on the back and it can be hard to get them apart without damaging them. The replacement covers have tabs you bend over to hold it on.
