Rust
Hi guys I'm looking for some insight into what causes the rust I have on my Z28 (no T tops). The first is the A pillar. I found it has some sponge-like thing inside it, so my going theory is that the moisture that gets in is trapped by the sponge and rots the pillar, so I think I'm going to have to cut that portion out and replace it, sponge-free.
The second is driver side interior wall next to my foot. How does this part rust and how can I fix it? I'm getting ready to put the new rug in, so I want to stop water leaks and fix what rust and rot I can.

Re: Rust
You might have a rust hole somewhere under the weatherstripping of the driver side door, higher up, and some moisture was soaking down the soundproofing inside... Same thing happened to me, although mine is a t-top and the hole was just under the t-top weatherstripping, on the very top of the A-pillar.
Wow, I envy that rust-free floor... Just look at mine!

You might want to have a look under your fender. You may have a big hole rusted out here:

The picture shows my passenger side, but you get the idea. There's another layer of metal inside there, your actual floor pan. My theory is that there's now a hole on the outside, and water/slush finally attacked that part of your floorpan directly and rust started there, too...
Either way, no worries, that's minor and easily fixable.

Re: Rust
Woh, I'm actually happy with my floor. I had to cut out part of the firewall near the passenger's feet. This car sat for 8 years and 2 floods up to the ground effects. I also have to fix the pillar as you can see its pretty badly rotted.
