exterior paint change for 92 Firebird

I recently picked up a 1992 Firebird, V8 305, just in need of some cosmetic tlc. She's my semi-DD...I drive a mini-van the rest of the time with our 3 kids.

I'm swapping out her gray interior for all black, which I scored at a nice price. So with an all black interior in mind, I am debating on exterior color. She is suppose to be black. But since I am converting the interior to black I just felt like black was too much and my husband seems to agree.

Our original intention was black with pink metallic flecks and a pink hawk on the hood. Now I am leaning towards the metallic raspberry with a black hawk to go with the black interior. My husband is seeming to lead that way too but I don't want it to scream "import" with the crazy color idea.

Would black on black be too much? Any suggestions to break up that black on black? Or should we stick with the original plan of metallic pink? I know most of you guys on here are cringing at the thought of pink on a Firebird. I've seen a metallic lilac Camaro that looked beautiful though. Any thoughts?

Re: exterior paint change for 92 Firebird

I have no problem with black on black. In fact, that is the plan for my Camaro once I get around to the cosmetic mods(engine/brakes/handling first). I'm probably going to to black exterior with the stripes in just a red metal flake so you can only see them if the light hits the flake, my interior will be black with red accents/trim.

Personally, I like the idea of the black on black with the metallic bird on the hood. Pink or purple metallic would look great and I don't think it would look rice at all. Assuming it's done properly of course.

I also have no problem with black on black but, like you said,I'm one of those guys that cringes at the thought of a pink 3rd gen be it metallic or not.
Have you and the hubby entertained the thought of a silver or charcoal metallic with a black metal flake bird?
The possibilities and color choices are WIDE open at this point.Black interior will accomadate any exterior color so,all I can say is take your time, look at different color options(around 100,000,000)I believe? maybe more, and decide what YOU want.
If you like pinkish metallic colors then by all means go for it!!
After all,it is YOUR car and if you like it then all will be good!
Noones (OPINION) will make any difference to you if you absolutely love the color you choose.
I have gotten some opinions on my choice of interior colors on my GTA but I like the black/grey combination so,its gonna stay regardless of how bad someone else thinks it looks! You can view pics of it in the photobucket album highlighted below.

Keep in mind that the color/texture of the wheels will also make a big contrast. If you run blk/blk, choose a shiny or contrasting wheel color I (complementary color) and maybe hit the car with some pinstripes or detail stripes that match, add the bird emblems, etc. It will look sinister. Or you can do it in black/black and do pink pinstripes and accents here and there in the interior. Make sure it is a dark pink, or it will just look like faded red.

Metallic pink will look happy and fresh, but not exactly sinister. I saw a pink '57 Nomad some years back with ruby red window tint and black-chrome wheels, and it looked fantastic. It's not just the color you choose, but how you accent it.

Just my opinion, don't shoot me for it.

Totally correct on that TA!
I spent 3 years on my black GTA and I love it!!
I am currently bringing a 91 z28 back to life.

Noone needs to be ridiculed on what color scheme they choose for their car.
Its their car and if they like it,let them like it!

And TA,I can think of at least 3 folks off the top of my head that have a bullet for both of us for the fuel pump access panel.
I wish those people could break down on the very same street as me at the very same time.
I got a spare f/p in the back and after the other person reaches a tow truck from their cell phone,I will be back up and running and wishing them luck as I casually drive away in my clean clothes!LOL!!

Re: exterior paint change for 92 Firebird

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

I decided to stick with the original black exterior to keep it simple and to give me that break in the solid black I will be putting a thin pink pinstripe on to go with the pink sail and hood birds. Simple and classy.

I decided against a pearl finish and the metallic finishes. After cleaning up the door jams in her I realized how beautiful that classic black looks and decided it was perfect with no need to change.

She should be ready for paint in the next month or two.
