How To Stop Rust Before Painting

Hi guys,
I'm kinda poor but I need to start working on my bird's body. I'll be replacing the doors, fenders, and patching the 1/4's. My rockers aren't rusted on the outside and I'm going to add some GFX so I just plan on leaving them.

My question is this. The car is my daily driver, and I don't have enough cash to repair everything at once. I know that primer isn't going to stop rust. So what should I spray on to keep her from rusting? There will be two week gaps between body work and probably two months from start to paint (hopefully).
TIA
Alex

Okay just to let you know i know little about body work but i do know about rust. my 1/4s are rust like all firebirds and camaros do. what i tend to do and what people tell me is u have to remove the rust. by grinding it out and using bondo. I think if you take out the rust which rust will keep growing and if u kill it by taking out the bad spot sand down the the new metal and prime it. it should stop the rust from furthering it from the car. rust is like cancer it keeps growing if u don't take it all out.

use a primer sealer ounce u get rid of the rust. I also treated all the pitted ares with sem rust mort before priming. You almost never get all the rust it stays in the pores and this product stops converts it.

Re: How To Stop Rust Before Painting

Thanks for the info. I plan on cutting the rust out and riveting new metal in. I know I'm going to replace the doors but I'm still debating what to do with the fenders. I can tell they're aftermarket cause they line up horribly (my car has a salvage title). I think I'm gonna replace them with repros with air extractors. Thanks for the primer sealant info.

You have to get down to the bare metal and eliminate the rust first, and then some guys just use an epoxy primer, but others will recommend a good etching primer, and cuts into the metal. After you lay down your primer of choice you have to lay down a sealer.

But if you're not looking for a long term solution and you just want to prevent flash rust while you continue to work on a car, look into a product called Picklex. http://www.picklex.com/
