Side air dams purpose?

Can someone tell me the purpose of the side air dams? I know the center piece helps with cooling but I don't know what the side ones are for. My front gfx are broken where the air dams attach and it would be much easier to just remove them. Any harm in this? (passenger side is already missing)

There is no need to ask the same question in two forums.

Since they're NOT cooling related, I asked the question here in the body forum. The question never got answered. They "might" serve a purpose is not an answer.
