Thats gotta be a stripped car, that is beyond lightweight for anything with an iron v8 in factory trim.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

That's factory specs, third gens aren't that heavy. The fourth gen such as my z28 weighed in at 3345. With a full tank it may weigh a bit more, but factory specs claim 3025. With full compacity which is 710 lbs it weighs 3735 according to door panel

I'd go actually weigh your car, becuase 3025 excessively light.

What factory options do you have? PM? PW? AC?

The T5 is lighter yes, but not by more than 50lbs or so, the 700r4 is 175lbs or so.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

1986 IROC-Z stock weight = 3,461.3.

I'd estimate mine to be right around 3,200, if not, less.

No A/C. When I say that, I mean no compressor, no blower motor, and I also pulled the heater core, the HVAC controls. No front or rear carpet, no sound proofing, no radio (all four speakers pulled). No backseats, no interior panels at all, no door panels either. No spare tire or jack. (Those alone are probably close to 50 pounds, I'd guess). No console at all, and if I want, I can bolt the non-electric power seat in as a driver seat, and save another +/- 20 pounds, whatever that heavy electric seat weighs. Maybe more.

With just one non electric seat bolted in, and a 1/4 tank of gas, I wouldn't be surprised at all if I dipped down to the 3,100 range.

After I betray GM and buy a Rustang as a new daily driver, I'm going to seriously get to work on the IROC. When I can afford it, I'll be bolting in a Spohn tubular K member, a fiberglass stock style hood (since no one that I know of sells a fiberglass IROC hood, and it only weighs like 26 pounds for a semi pin-on hood). Edelbrock aluminum heads just to keep it cheap, since I'm not made of money, and couldn't buy Brodix's. Other than that, just some basic weight reduction. The VFN fiberglass doors, and hope that a very talented fibgerglass guy could make them work, with a lighter manual regulator, while still running glass. Fiberglass fenders.

All of that stuff should get me very light, for less than $5K when I have that much to spare for a car. Slowly but surely it'll get light, even though I've only got a little over $3K so far, and the Mustang I want to buy as new daily driver will probably be around $7K.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

The bad thing is that I have absolutely no clue what labor will cost me. The price of the parts that I'd like to buy are around $3,500 including the Spohn tubular K member/A-Arm/Coil over package since that's really what I need. This is why I don't want to start work on the IROC until next summer. When I come back to reality, I cry because I know it'll cost so much.

If I skimped on parts, I could get heads and a decent 383 stroker kit for around $2K, and hope to have it rebuilt and running again for less than 3. Then another 3.5 in parts, and who knows how much labor costs for custom fabbing fiberglass doors. Installing a fiberglass dash with dzus fasteners, and installing a pin on hood is something I could do in probably less than 2 hours if I bought a bolt in dzus rail.

I took this caterpillar off of my tire, for weight reduction. He thought he was going to get a free ride.

At least my Z28 badge is doing something worthwhile until it's back in the IROC with a new dash.

Unfortunately that pile is what's going to be going towards an '01-'04 Mustang, since I've really been wanting something newer for a while. Then, it'll be right back to saving, for rebuilding the IROC.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

Well this is my fourth camaro, my third third-gen. My first camaro was an 83 z28 I had it as a first car I knew nothing bout cars at the time so I never messed with it. My second was a 90 rs 305 auto. the weight was 3250 with driver at 175 and it was accurate to spec I had it weighed, my fourth gen was close to spec to it was a 95 z28, and then now this 92 rs. So I trust the readings. And actually it may weigh a little less bc I replaced to t tops with lighter glass, not on purpose but the ones that were on it didn't match so when I got matching ones they were less in weight.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

I had my car on a corner weighting machine recently. It weighed 3509lbs. Its a well optioned IROC 350. That is with:

Aluminum heads
no AIR system
headers
ministarter
tubular k-member, a-arms
13" Wilwood front brakes
sub frame connectors
50lbs of dynamat
40lbs of amps in the back
tubular (heavy) rear suspension
700R4
3/4 tank of gas

Anybody with a V8 in street trim under 3200 is full of it or hasn't weighed their car.

My V8 car in street trim was under 3200lbs, and I did weigh it. See post #2.

Check again. I said street trim. I do not consider:

no A/C
no Heat
no rear seats
no power steering

to be street trim. Maybe you do.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

All this thread shows is how unaccurate the scales are. There is no way similar optioned 3rd gens are 400lbs different. I'll trust the corner weighting chassis setup jig at my local race shop.

When I made that post, my Camaro was my only car, I drove it everyday. So I do consider that street trim.

My truck doesn't even have AC, rear seats, or power steering, and it is 100% stock. And I also consider it to be in 'street trim'.

And even with heat, it still would have weighed under 3100lbs.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

It still doesn't add up though. So A/C, rear seats, and power steering are probably 200lbs, if that. That gets up up to 3300. That is still a 200lb difference between our weights. I just don't see it happening. Sure I've added some weight, but I've subtracted too.

I still think there is way to much variability in the scales. What type of machine did you use to weigh yours?

And we can agree to disagree on the "Street Trim" part.

I did some other weight reduction things, such as aluminum DS, aluminum bumper, removed the interior insulation, and removed most emissions equipment.
My car also has very few options, no overhead console, no power seats or power windows, etc.

Two different drive-on scales. At the dump in port townsend and at a JY.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

Irocs weigh more than a rs anyways and on top of that to be a 350 it has to have tuned port which weighs a but load more than a tbi system. I have had my camaro weighed just like the specs said it weighs within 100 lbs of what it said. It has everything in it, no weight reduction at all. I'm bout to pull out all the interior and swap over a 1997 interior, but that won't affect it much. A fourth gen weighs more than a third gen and a fourth gn doesn't barely weigh 3500 lbs.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

You also must consider they look similar, but fact is the length and widths and heights changed throughout the years, they are not identical. More surface area more weight, it doesn't take much to add up. Then you have to figure in, some came disc brakes some came drum brakes some came with aluminu
drive shafts some came with steel, some came with a 9g suspension system some didn't, it's not what you seethat matters it's what you don't see that does. A cornering machine isn't going to let you know your exhalst sytem weighs 100 lbs and Jim bos weighs 75, get what I'm saying? You have to know your history on the cars before trying to compare weights. The weight range, intact, was anywhere from 2900 to 3300 lbs look up a third gens statistics page. None of the years weighed the same, so it's not we are
full of it, it's that, that's the facts.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

So I looked at the tech data.

An unoptioned '87 350TPI IROC is 3341.

+ my options

AC3 Power Seat 7.9
AM9 Fold Down Rear Seat -3.5
AU3 Power Locks 3.1
A31 Power Windows 3.9
B84 Side Molding 1.3
C49 Rear defogger 0.9
C60 Air Conditioning 42.7 with L98
DE1 Back window Shade 18.5
D34 Vanity Mirror 0.4
DG7 Electric Side Mirrors 1.3
J65 4-wheel disc brakes 2.6 (Z/28 w/L98 only)
K34 Cruise control 5.3
MD8 Automatic Trans 101.9 (with 305 & 350)
N10 Dual exhaust 12.8
T96 Fog Lamps 4.4
U75 Power Antenna 2.6

= 3547lbs.

Now lets subtract and add my mods (these weights are estimates)

Al heads -50
removed AIR system -12
headers -6
ministarter -11
Al driveshaft -9
tubular k-member and a-arm -20
Al balancer -4
Dynamat +50
Amps +30
tubular torque arm + crossmember with ds loop +15
tuburlar LCA +4
sub frame connectors +15
LCA relocation brackets +4
trans cooler +3
heavy gauge wiring +4

=3560

vs. 3509 actual weight. Sounds reasonable to be.

Did you look at the tech data?

The only numbers I see are:

1987 Model Year Base Weight
IROC-Z 305 5.0 5-Speed 3250
Formula 305 5.0 5-Speed 3383
IROC-Z 350 5.7 Automatic Overdrive 3341
GTA 350 5.7 Automatic Overdrive 3476

1992 Model Year Curb Weight
Camaro Coupe 3105
Convertible 3220
Z28 Coupe 3273
Convertible 3377

I'm not seeing any V8s under 3200 there.

I do admit the earlier cars are likely lighter and maybe you could get a stripper '82 Z28 under 3200. But I still don't consider a stripper to be "Street Trim". Again your definition may be different.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

Yeah for your car maybe especially being an 87 but that's just one car. All cars are going to weigh in different due to the fact they were made with machine they aren't going to all be the same. Weights vary, not to mention when u do mod you can't go based off of package weights, I work at a shipping co and I know how companies twist weights to save money. Happens all the time. So u might actually want to weigh your parts. But it doesn't even really matter bc these cars are staill light weight compared to newer cars. The motors are made to handle that weight

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

It says for 92 camaro coupe curb weight 3105, right? Camaro coupe is base model which is the rally sport, which come with v6 and 305 ci v8s so how you figure no camaro with v8 weigh in less than 3200 lbs? That's curb weight on top of that which is average 200 lbs of pressure, which means the. Car would actually weigh less than 3000 lbs, explain that one?

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

I merely gave you an example of how my car weights what it does. You'd think by this thread that I'd have to have 200lbs of lead somewhere in the car to weigh 3500. Simply not true. Its easy to hit 3500-3600 in these cars. I even have over 100lbs of weight reduction.

I think people sometimes just look at unoptioned shipping weight and use that number. Instead you need to consider weight of options + 100 lbs of gas and fluids. I also would not trust truck scales designed to weigh 100,000lb 18 wheelers or dump scales that are only designed to measure the difference in weight after dumping.

In fact several years ago I weighed my car at Englishtown Raceway and it measured 3410, that was when the vehicle was stock weight. Thats a full 130lbs lighter than the actual weight. My only point is that I do not trust most scales. I'll stick with the number from the chassis weighting scale.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

I don't blame you in that measure i don't trust just one of anything. That's why you go to more than one, here it's easy there are about seven weigh stations here, other places are not so lucky. I do see your point though.

1.) 1988 IROC-Z28

2.) 350 TPI, 700R4

3.) Disc brakes, T-Tops, oil cooler, a.c./heat, power steering, etc.

4.) Flowmaster cat-back, mild cam, 1.6 roller rockers, air intake modifications, bolt-on's, A.C. 5.) I do not know what my car would weigh in at the moment. Stock form with everything comes in at 3,352lbs.

For one thing none of the stuff mentioned (and it's not all of it either) affects my ability to drive the car. In fact the car has been alot better off without all that crap on it and my engine bay is alot cleaner and easier to work in.

2nd, my car isn't really a "street" car per say. That is I don't drive it daily at all. It's a weekend warrior and I race it on the weekends if I find anyone to race. So it's more or less a 1-2 day a weekend cruiser/street car, lol.

Hmmm a car that is only driven on the street. Sounds like a street car to me.

How much time do you estimate you'd drop in the 1/4 mile but pulling your interior?

You do what you want its your car, but me personally I can't stand seeing a stripped car on the road, especially one without a cage and with a stock drivetrain.

Sorry to pick on you, stripped cars are one of my pet peeves.

Well.... I mean, I don't want to come off as a rude arrogant son of a gun because that's what I am but I don't do street racing for one thing. I do racing on the highway with no other cars around. That's how I do it and that's the best way other than driving way out of my way to Gateway at the drag strip.

The interior comment cracks me up guy. However, most of the stripping done has been to the engine bay and yes, my car looks way better without all that crap inside the car too. It's being prepped for the future mods including a roll-bar. But until then, read on my brother.

Again, I don't want to sound like a ***** because I don't want bad Internets but with all of the stuff done for my car so far it's a fun packed ride to be in the car with me! But you do what you do with your car, others do what they do and I am continuing to work on my project code named Operation IROC-Z. Follow my work if you would like to.

Oh, and I have t-tops which means if I ever flip on top of my ride it'll probably kill me seeing as how the glass might just go into me. Ouch!

Maybe I'm old fashioned (I'm 24) but I happen to think this:

Looks better than this:

But we can agree to disagree on that one.

BTW I do race on a real road course with this fully featured full weight car. Its a blast. The suspension is setup for this weight. And its nice to have A/C, music, relative quiet, and a seat for my buddy while I'm cruising on the highway to the track.

Yeah, each to his own taste. My car had everything in it up until a month or so ago when I started really getting into my project. My car is also NOT a daily driver. It's a weekend warrior. I don't even drive it every weekend either. Yes, the 1st pic is nice and that's what mine looked like but even the 2nd pic is abit extreme since mine isn't gutted like that with the exception of all pieces with weight being removed. I'm not done yet though, I've got some more work to do on the interior.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

Heres mine...

1. 1985 Z28
2. 5.0 TPI, 700R4
3. T-Tops, Power locks and windows, power driver seat.
4. A/C was deleted, Aftermarket fiberglass hood, Small tube headers and 2-1/2" Dual exhaust W/O cat, Stripped the smog pump off, Removed the cruise control, removed the windshield washer reservoir and tubes, removed the jack and spare tire.
5. 3,280 lbs Full tank, W/O the driver. I weigh 160 which takes it to 3,440 with me.

I want to get it below 3,000 lbs. I am going to replace the seats with lighter weight racing seats, and once i put my new engine in which has more aluminum, it should get to right around there. I hope!!!!

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

I see this thread is over a year old, but...why not!

1. 1991 Firebird
2. 305 TBI, T-5
3. T-Tops, A/C
4. Completely stock, except for all aluminum 2-core radiator.
5. 3293 lbs

The weight above was before the radiator swap (might have cut a few lbs), and with a bit less than a 1/4 tank of gas or so.

Various mods I have planned for the long term with both add and reduce weight. Probably the first thing to happen will be A/C removal (Hey, I've got t-tops anyway!)

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

I posted ages ago wondering what mine weighed, so when I was leave in March, I weighed it in at:
3290

88 Formula 350. I have added SFC, heavy leather 4th gen seats, and a strut bar.
Then I have removed the spare tire, jack, and such. Then I added Aluminum heads.

When I get home, I am going to put in my light Recaro seats in, and remove the rest of my AC stuff. I will prob put on some lighter wheels too and got to an Aluminum hood. I am hoping to get down to around 3100ish.

P.S, my 1990 Mustang GT 5.0 Auto weighed in at 3310. Bone stock with 17" GT500 replica wheels.
