Black Plastic Between headlights

What are the black pieces of plastic between the headlights and what are they for???

They keep your car's headlights from melting the each other and if they are removed the headlight will self destruct. No no i'm just kidding. the serious answer is that the are proly there becuase the headlighs are staggered and the piece of black plastic just covers the side of the headlight. Ya know to keep it cleanlooking and finish it off, purely cosemetic IMO.
