looks a thousand times better as far as bodywork, as far as paint they did a good job but for the most part your paint was pretty good. But sweet ride none the less.

What was the story with the passenger door? Did a motorbike run into it when you opened it or something?

Re: Finally got my 91 RS painted
i like that! looks good from the pics. I've been thinking about a maaco paint job on my car. just to get it looking better than it does now. Did you go with their top of the line paint? I went and talked to them and saw they had like 5 different levels. I really want to know how long it holds up though. looks great for now anyways, i hope it lasts long.

Re: Finally got my 91 RS painted
Nice paint job.

Im possibly thinking about using macco.

Did they do all the body work or did you?

Also did you sand down and repaint or did they repaint over your old paint job?

Thanks

Re: Finally got my 91 RS painted
I've had the Maaco jobs on a couple of my cars. If you do the prep work yourself the paint job will come out looking pretty good. At a distance it always will but in my experience there are a few things wrong with their paint work. You get a fair amount of orange peel and the occasional run in the paint which they can't be bothered to do anything about. The real kicker is that the paint job usually doesn't last. In 3 to 5 years you'll be repainting the car again. I'd only use Maaco as a quick fix to make a daily driver look decent when the original or the current paint job is really bad.

My 1987 Trans-AM has a Maaco job on it. Among the problems I have is that the paint split in two areas last time it got cold. So the paint job is very fragile. According to the original owner the car was painted about 5 years ago and was mostly garage kept. The car was driven though as the front bumper cover is literally peppered with white spots from rock chips. The paint was probably applied in a single coat, possibly two and that's it given the thickness of what I've seen. Fortunately this is mostly confined to the bumper cover. Don't get me wrong the car still looks good for the most part, but once you start going over everything with a fine tooth comb, it's a pretty mediocre paint job.

There is a reason why good paint jobs can cost several thousand dollars. You get what you pay for.

Re: Finally got my 91 RS painted
Yeah, all this I know already. I've had several friends with macco jobs that have lasted many years. It's all about keeping it waxed and taking care of it. I just felt 3,500 is too much for a daily driver. I'd probably loose my head if It got damaged. This way, I'm okay with still driving it.

As for the prep info... I prepped the front bumper myself, and they even went through and touched up some spots, but they did prep the whole car, prime it, and did an excellent job on the body work, my driver door had about 20 or 30 bad dings and a knee-mark, and they got it all straightened out for me. The hood was very rough and horribly wavy, they did a great job on that as well.

Only complaint i have was they over sprayed a few things. Nothing too serious It cleaned right up. The shop told me they are going to wet sand the run out for me as well. And he also have me a bottle of paint for touch-ups etc. Overall I'm very happy, they took care of me.

Over spray is the Maaco signature. With better prep, it wouldn't have happened. Still it's good that you are pleased with the results and it didn't cost you too much to get them.

Re: Finally got my 91 RS painted
Your in the same boat I was in back in 1999 when my RR hub broke. I totaled my car and for over a year drove it with the RR panel all cut up. 1 bodyshop wanted $5000 to fix the fender and paint the car. I found another place that fixed all the bodywork not just the fender and painted it replaced the black sticker strips my gold strips. All of that was $2000 and I had 10 years on the paint. Now I want to change it a little again. Your car looks good.
