Front bumper for an 84 Bird
Ok, I am working on an 84 firebird. The guy I bought it from wrecked it and bent the inner bumper, the plastic molding part. I dont see how you can fix the bent plastic. I have straighten out most of the metal that was bent. I just got back from my buddies salvage yard and could only find a bumper for a Trans Am, not sure what year. I am wondering if I could use that front bumper and put it on the firebird. I have read alot of the post and from that I have gathered that it will work but I will need to put the ground effects on the rest of the car. I am just wondering If I am correct.

The trans am I looked at I dont think was an '84. I was just wondering if the inner bumper and the outer shell will fit the car? If I need to I can put the ground effects on the rest of the car, I will just have to drill holes in the car right?

Re: Front bumper for an 84 Bird
The '82-'84 models used the same impact bar (the metal bumper) and absorber pads (the plastic honeycomb part). The '85-'90, and '91-'92 years used slightly different pieces. Base Firebirds and Trans Ams used the same parts, I believe. Ground effects were an option on all Trans Ams in '84. I know because used to have one. If you can't find what you need in the local junkyard, Hawk's ThirdGen carries used ones. BTW, the parts from any year, will fit any other year as long as they're matched (impact bar, absorber pad, bumper cover all from the same year group - '82-84, '85-'90, or '91-'92).

So Larry what your are saying is that I can take a complete bumper assembly (inner bumper, absorber, and shell) off any year and put it on my 84 as long as all three peice come off the same car.

If they're all from the same car, that guarantees it'll fit. But you could also mix and match within the same year group. For example, an impact bar from an '83, an absorber pad from an '82 and a bumper cover from an '84 would all work together. There were essentially three designs: '82-'84, '85-'90, and '91-'92. As long as all three parts came from the same design, you're OK.

Re: Front bumper for an 84 Bird
its too bad youre soo far away im stripping down an 84 and i have a perfect bumper with ground effects and the impact bar im trying to sell....but to help from what ive read the and seen from doing bumpers myself is they are generally the same bolting up to the fenders and supports....the ground effects are different if your switching to a newer stlye on old fenders i believe you will have to drill new holes...as far as the impact bars they are the same from 82to84, then 85 to 90, then 90to92 but as long as you get them from the same year group itll all line up except the ground effects....if you need any pics of the difference let me know i have the 84 and a 90 witht he ground effects off the front fenders now i coupld snap some pics if you need them

Personally I like the 82-84 style better. Maybe just because I rarely see them. The 84 bumper might be worth the price if you're going to have to buy all the extra parts and the ground effects to switch to the 85. You might also check with youngsfbody.com. I know they sell used bumpers but I'm not sure how much they charge. Might be worth checking out third gen ranch too.

Re: Front bumper for an 84 Bird
I dont need any ground effects or extra body parts, I have searched through two junkyards and have only seen three 82-84 front bumpers and they are all wrecked. I was thinking about switching the the 85. I looked at thirdgen and didnt see any and have heard you wont get your products from youngs. I like the 91-92 model and really kinda wanna put that on my 84 but have not been able to find one of those either. I have only been able to find one bumper and it was the 85.
