Hello Everyone,

I have been posting on these boards for a long time now about my restoration and now the car actually may get finished. Below are the links to the new paint, weatherstrip, etc that is now in progress. I am taking the car to 99K GM black with heavy clear. Let me know what you think!

Re: 1991 Trans Am GTA Restoration Update
Hi, looks like you're doing really great work so far. It's obvious you know what your doing simply by the primer and guide coat method your using, so I was wondering if you could give me a little advice? I have probably put about 5 coats of bondo on my front fenders of my 83 camaro. By 5 coats I mean that I've put a coat on where I've hammered and dollied, not covered the fender with bondo. Anyway I've put 5 coats down, becuase I'll go to sand the bondo and can't seem to get it even close to where it ought to be. I either sand it too far down, or just can't get it to work. How do you get it close to the point of being level enough for high build primer and blocking?

Thanks, DacMan

You are suppose to put a little extra on, after it dries most of the way, you use a tool that I believe is called a cheese grater, to get the large amounts of extra material off.

To get it close, hand sand it with a block! You can start at like 80 grit, then work your way up, with filler primer, you do not have to go to high with the grit.

A power sander with not make it flat, and there is a product called "glazing putty" that can go over bondo to make it near perfect (easy to sand and fills little spots).
ALSO make sure your following the directions for the right amount of hardener!

Re: 1991 Trans Am GTA Restoration Update
one summer i worked at a body shop and a old timer showed me a trick with a paint stir stick. wrap your sandpaper around one of them and block it, its time consuming but it will turn out good.

Very nice job. Hey. Is that a Plymouth Duster in the background? Just wondering. My brother in law had one of those.

Yeah make sure you get a block sander, a lot of people try to use a circular sander which will just follow the curves in the car, so it won't come out smooth

Re: 1991 Trans Am GTA Restoration Update
Thanks everyone! We hope to paint early next week!

Basically, the whole entire car has been block sanded just to ensure the body lines are correct. I loved the maroon color but I think I have to take it to black.

I am going to keep the GTA rims but may also get a black set for daily driving.

kevmann that is a Plymouth Duster. It is getting fully restored also. I have heard it was the exact same car Al Bundy drove.

One thing to keep in mind if you are just starting out when you repair a dent say it is 10" long and you have a low spot in the middle and you wipe filler only in the low spot and start blocking the filler then you are also blocking the filler you applyed on the first coat and sand uneven so if you have to apply a 2nd coat then wipe the whole area that was wiped before

Great pics! I have a 91 GTA myself! I'm stoked that you're posting your painting process; I've got a bit of bodywork and paint to do too. I'll get some pics of my car up as soon as I can, if you'd like to see em.

Re: 1991 Trans Am GTA Restoration Update
You car is a beauty! Seeing your car in black reminds me of why I am switching to black from maroon. All TA's look good in black but there is just something about the 91-92 body style in black. It just looks stealthy.

Take my advice, when you are getting cash together to start your painting/restoration take what you think it will cost and double it. You will be well prepared financially and your project will not get killed from running out of money. There have been more than a few points where I grossly underestimated how much something would cost.

Feel free to contact me and ask questions. I have built mine from the ground up and am more than willing to help anyone.
