Re: undercoating

I've heard of POR-15 coming off in a few years time. I've also been hearing a lot of good things about Rustbullet.

I agree JamesC. Por-15 is a great product. If POR-15 flaked off then someone did'nt properly apply it....it's thats simple. Follow the directions on the can and it will never come off.

Re: undercoating

When I go to get my seat reupholsterd this summer Im using rubberized undercoating on the entire interior then using sound deading mat in the rear well of my car. I think Ill use a spray undercoating for under my car when I get finished painting.

i used 3m rubber coat no complaints. once it drys its as hard as a bed liner, plus it cuts down on the interior road noises ...

I read it somewhere a while back. I can't remember where. You are absolutely right it could simply have been the application of it that was at fault.

Re: undercoating

If Por 15 flaked off after a year or so...then yeah. It simply wasnt applied correctly. Or someone painted over dirt haha. That stuff is there to stay.

I prefer the non-glossy, textured look of the undercoating.

FueledSoul: So that stuff came out of a spray can? And it dried to a hard shell? Every "rubberized" undercoating Ive ever used has stayed soft and didnt like to be brushed against. I was using autozone stuff though....never tried the actual 3M brand.

Ive used Duplicolor bedliner...but that stuff sprays on pretty thin, and can chip pretty easy. Looks great at first...but after a while just doesnt hold up.

J.

Re: undercoating

I found this on the net (I wondered about undercoating because a body shop owner once told me essentially what follows): A word about undercoating: this product is often mistaken for rust proofing material. Actually, it's used more to deaden road noise and can actually promote rust when it dries and cracks to form water-trapping pockets.

Can I assume the rubberized version wouldn't dry/crack?

Anyway, experience or words of wisdom?

I was told the same thing by a mechanic friend of mine a couple years ago. I used the 3m undercoating on my Camaro and I can tell you it doesn't like the heat from headers. It dried out and flaked off the front subframes near my headers after only 1 summer of driving.

Re: undercoating

I used 3M undercoating on my then brand-new 1989 Formula. Worked great and held up fine for the six years I owned the car until it was stolen/totalled. I'm sure there are better products on the market today, but the 3M worked great.

Re: undercoating

I did the whole underside of my car this past winter with por-15. My original plan was por-15 and then undercoat on top of that, but after scraping the undercoating out of the wheel wells I changed my mind about ever using undercoat It actually looks really good. You do need to get it down to bare metal though for it to stick right, I did a test area on some of the original primer/paint on the underside. After its dry I could scrape at it and it flaked off. I ended up sanding the whole underside down. Took me about a week working a few hours a night to get it sanded. Looks really nice now though! There's no getting that stuff off if you do the right prep work. Same thing goes for your skin if you get any of it on you
