Need info on T Tops
Need info on T Tops
Hey, I am currently looking at a nice 91 RS T Tops, the deal seems good the car looks to be pretty mint, no scratches no dings nothing, only 75k original miles, but it's a T Top and I was wondering first off how effective is weather sealing the t tops and also how expensive it would be to replace the t tops when it needs it. Basically I'd like some info on T Tops because I'd really like this car but I hear T Tops are a pain.
Re: Need info on T Tops
T Top aren't that much of a pain if the seals are good. If not check out this site for replacement T Top's weather seal and the whole 9.

Re: Need info on T Tops
T-tops leak. End of story. They always have, they always will. The only way to stop them from leaking is to fill in all the cracks with epoxy glue - then you have a hard top - which will still leak, because the door glass meets the weatherstripping directly. The ONLY cars that don't leak, are those where the door glass has metal around it. It's just a fact of life.
BUT - you can control how much they leak, by adjusting the tops and the door glass, and having a good weatherstripping seal. Worse case scenerio, the floorboards fill up with an inch or better puddles. Best case scenerio, you get a few drips at the door edge of the T-top at the front corner and the rear corner in a hard rain or at the car wash.
But - in my world - it's well worth it! I'd love a vert - I think everyone would. But they are pricey, and kinda require a garage (in my mind) (which I don't have). T-Tops are the next best thing. I'm from the 80's - that was my teen/young adult years. That's T-Top generation! Nothing beats T-tops in my mind, short of a vert. I just love riding down the road with the tops out! Even if I'm going 3 blocks to the Quicky Mart, I'll take 3 minutes and remove the tops.
More than leaking - consider the frame strength differences - hardtops are stronger, although not by much. These cars, whether hardtop, T-top, or vert - really flex alot, and thus really need subframe connectors added in. If you're looking for a track car - might rather have a hardtop. If looking for a street cruiser, then the T-top is fine - if that's what you want.
Bottom line - get the car body style you want. You can always make it stronger, less likely to leak, etc. But you can't really (although it has been done), make a T-top car out of a hardtop car, or make a hardtop out of a T-top - and a vert will always be a vert - as bad as alot of us would likie to have a vert, I'm sure there'd be a dead person somewhere if we ever heard of a vert owner welding a hardtop onto a vert!
