The frame around the hatch glass on my camaro is all rusty & needs painting. I've never painted any part of a car but want to start, so I'm looking for some advice on where to start ie materials & techniques can anyone help?
Thanks

Re: Hatch glass frame painting

I just did mine - not absolutely perfect, but looks damned good. I took the blue painters tape (WalMart), and taped everything off, just getting the edge of the tape up under the metal edging. I taped a good 6 inches on either side, then I taped newspaper all over everywhere else ('cause I know I'm accident prone!). Then, I took some 220 sandpaper and saned down the edging smooth. Then, a foam-tipped brush and a small can of Rustoleum Satin Black. Let it dry a day (was really humid here), and it turned out really nice - only if you put your nose on it can you see the 'stroke marks' - I think it helped alot to use the foam brush, and I kinda put it on thicker than usual so that the stroke markes would 'blend' with gravity.

Re: Hatch glass frame painting

Ok cool, Imma do that when ever i got time ( I better check the weather before doing so cause it just rain real hard today)
Oh yea today i tried taking my hatch off then i found out my key the guy gave me isnt the right one to unlock the hatch. So what can i do to take it off without having a keysmith coming in to unlock my hatch (i can unlock all other doors of my *85* camaro but not the *86* hatch)

Thanks for that dude, gonna have a go tomorrow as it's forecast good weather. @Fryedaddy: You could just swap the lock cylinder from your old hatch?

Re: Hatch glass frame painting

sorry I completely misread the post, what you can do is lean in the trunk for the inside of the car, remove the trim from in front of the latch and you can operate the lock cylinder with your fingers, once open you can then get ahold of a new lock cylinder and swap them.

Re: Hatch glass frame painting

Ok I just check to see if i could do it from behind and no success unless i want to tear up my plastic cover in half. The key lock is located behind liscense plate as well. Now i need to know how can i remove the plastic cover without tearing it up. Ill let you know if i found any progress in doing so. Also I am going to change my windshield of the hatch what stuff is needed when changing the windshield? I know im going to need some sort of trim and weatherstriping on it can someone find out what they are call exactly?

Re: Hatch glass frame painting

Yeah - there are a couple screws in the top of the plastic that hold it in, and you can't get to them with the hatch closed.

Glad it worked out for you - I wouldn't go crazy and paint the entire car that way, but it works for the little trim pieces here and there.

I also got a rattle can, and removed the plastic cowling above the windshield wiper motor, cleaned and sprayed it as well. It's amazing what some small little touch ups can do. If you do this, be careful of the windshield - I slipped with the pry tool I was using to pop the tabs on the cowling out, and caught just under the edge of the windshield - needless to say it cracked from the bottom to the top, and I had to spend $160 on a new windshield {I wasn't happy, but you gotta laugh these things off}
