What prep work needs to be done b4 taking my camaro to get painted

i just bought a 91 camaro rs (will post pics later) its painted the original Teal & its pretty decent. I want to take it to get repainted the same color with high gloss with black racing stripes. I don't know the ins/outs of cars so my question is what do i need to do before i take it to the shop to get painted. and what's the average pricing on a paint job like this.

For mine i took off:
Front and rear bumper covers, all ground effects, all weatherstripping, front light bar and tails, windshield, hatch, spoiler, hood, pretty much everything except the doors. And be sure to take out all the interior, I can't imagine trying to get all the dust outa there lol.

As for cost you get what you pay for....i wanted a show quality job and thats what i got. Average pricing for a good job would be 2-3k, show job 4+, or maaco for around 500-1000. Drive your car to some local shops and ask for an estimate. All estimates are free so get lots of them and check out previous paint jobs that shop has done. You'll make the right choice.

Any painter will tell you; the more pieces the car is in the better. I'd remove all glass, the entire interior, the doors, ground effects, front and rear bumper covers, the bumpers, etc. Have everything sprayed separately and installed by the body shop. When I take mine to get it painted, it will basically be just the body sitting on enough suspension and good enough tires to roll the thing around. That's the best way.

Some shops like Maaco or 1-day don't like the car in pieces, but talk to the manager. Ideally, you want the doors off so they can shoot the jams, have them let you reattach and align the doors correctly then shoot the whole car. If you have them do it in pieces, make sure they paint the panels oriented correctly- in other words, the hood needs to be painted laying flat; the doors and fenders hanging as they would when installed on the car... this is particularly important if you are shooting a metallic, because it has to 'flow' properly. Otherwise the panels will appear to be slightly different colors when they are reinstalled on the car.

That's because Maaco has an aversion to doing things right, or doing them well.

It is ALL in the prep. Search the site for instructions, but if you can take care of the dings, block sand it until all the panels are straight, strip everything off it prior to paint, you should be able to get a basic paintjob to look pretty good. Call some local high schools and community colleges and see if they have a shop class that might be interested in doing the work for you. Couldn't hurt...
