bumpers that will match up

I have an 89 RS. Bought this car as a shell and it's coming along nicely. 2002 crate motor (305 tbi with about 50K on it), 5 speed standard tranny, dash, elec harness, and leather interior all from a 91 RS. (In a moment of stupidity I bought my teenage son the 91 RS and he wrecked it shortly thereafter with front suspension damage that was beyond repair). Anyway, I removed the RS kit from the 89 because I prefer the look of the car to the look of the plastic. I need to know models and years for compatible bumpers front and rear. I am basically going for a pure sport coupe model look. Did berlinetta and sport coupe's have the same bumpers? Did chevy make a straight sport coupe for every year of the third gen camaro? I just don't want to grab bumpers at pick and pull that look right only to find there were slight differences in model or year made.

Re: bumpers that will match up

Generally speaking there is two main sections for the ground effects. 82-89 & 90-92.
Now, the Sport Coupe option was available from 82-88ish (I believe dont quote me) and it had no ground effects.

Now the 1982-84ish Z28 had a different nose, a three-piece rear spoiler and front, side, and rear lower body valances.

Berlinetta is compadible across the board they ran from 84-86.

The Iroc-Z ran from 85-90 and what is largely considered the standard ground effects.
Like this .

In 1991, due to low sales in 1990, Camaros received a facelift in the form of a ground effects package for both the RS and Z28 models. It continued until the end of production in 1992.

As for compatibility, i'd say to stay within the same model years. Although some are interchangable, some aren't. Hope this helps and Welcome to TGO!

Re: bumpers that will match up

The Base sport coupe, including the berlinetta from years 1982-1984 did have different front bumper covers that have larger front triple nose openings and deeper and more square front turn signals to that of the 1987 LT. The 85, 86, & 87 Sport Coupe (including the 1987 LT) and 85 & 86 berlinetta got a new front end cap with more narrow nose openings and wider front turn signals like shown in the 1987 Sport Coupe pic below. The 1987 Sport Coupe and LT are similiar to the 85-86 front cap but no berlinetta was made for 87. The optional rear spoilers were identical up to 1986 in which the 87 got the third brake light incorporated into the rear spoiler and was wider.

The only base Camaro Sport Coupe that did get ground effects from the factory and two types of rear spoilers (a once piece smaller version of the 91-92 Z28, and some had the three piece as the 1987) was the 1988 model.

85-90 ground effects were pretty much the same style until 91-92 when they got the more "aero" look design

And....the rare front fog lights that were available for base Sport Coupe and berlinetta in 86 and only on the LT in 87 (from what I have seen on order forms but pictures otherwise tell a different story).

Yea, I got wordy....

Re: bumpers that will match up

Hello MY87LT,

I need to replace the front bumper to my 91 Camaro RS, but I know that it is not the stock bumper. My dad changed it for me in high school and I think it is from an older Berlinetta. Can you help me verify??

Thank you!

Thank you! The front bumper isn't so nice after this morning's fender bender... That's why I am looking for info to replace it and get it looking nice again!

Re: bumpers that will match up

Yea, that's the nose from the non-ground effect Camaro's from 1985-1987. The nose you need you can get from from a 1985-1992 IROC, Z28, RS, and even the 1988 Base Camaro. It should fit without issue. The ground effects from 1985-1990 are different than that of the 1991-1992 Camaro's.

Thank you for the information! I really appreciate. Now I just have to hunt for one. Do you recommend placing a "wanted" ad in the marketplace section?

Re: bumpers that will match up

You can, or check with local bumper shops in your area if they have any front bumper covers for your Camaro.
